I have been working at Essence full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company is great if you want to get a start in media with huge opportunity to learn and some of the perks that you get with the company are great.

Generally, the people in the company are very positive and kind. You can make great friends there if you can deal with the politics.

    Cons

There's no effort for company culture, you feel like a machine just clocking in and clocking out. Despite complaints, it doesn't seem like much is being done to change this.

I have been working at Essence full-time

    Pros

    Great, smart people
People are approachable when you ask for help with something
Team members look after each other and are a great laugh to be with
There are people I want to stay in contact as friends when it is time to leave
The culture is great, it is better than predicted prior to joining
Everyone is quite young so you will have a lot in common

    Cons

There are bullies in the workplace, who from the moment go, try to destroy the Essence culture for own gain - they need to go before they do any damage to the Essence brand

Some people are just "yes men", just bowing down to what the client wants or suggests

Promises not being kept to employees by management

No overtime pay, this really needs to be looked at as some of us are working seriously long health-damaging hours

    Advice to Management

I think management should find these people who are trying to bring morale down in the company and teach them about our culture (as it seems they have not had the Essence culture training), if they don't improve, kick them out. This company is known for hard working, smart but funny and nice people, not crass, rude and demanding respect from the word go. You earn the respect.

If the founders came in together and be in each team for a few weeks (posed as someone else or bring in people from the other offices posed as someone else) in each team, I am sure they would find the bullies and sort it out.

Trainings for some new starters seem to have gone out of the window, there are people who don't know what they are doing due to lack of training or not shown the ropes of what we do on a day to day basis for clients. Allow first 2-3 weeks for just trainings and do not do any actual work at all - we need people to feel comfortable with the training and the work required of them. This means getting used to the culture, the software and understanding how to do certain tasks the Essence way.

Every year, the company should hold a global mandatory meeting to which it will only be about the culture of Essence; this will remind people about who we are, why we do things the way we do and what is the culture of Essence like and how to demonstrate it. Everyone must attend and if they don't then they will need to be shown the door.

This actually hurts me writing this.

I have been working at Essence full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, socials and friendly people.

    Cons

    - Not enough desks available, so you come in every day not knowing if you will get a desk.
    - No recognition for hard work, apart from good managers.
    - Lack of career progression and support, which leads to lots of talented people leaving every month.
    - Promotions are often based on who you know, and they prefer to hire externally then promote from within.
    - Not much pushback from senior leaders, and over promising to clients, resulting in long hours and stress.
    - A lot of micromanagement and cliques within teams.
