Pros

If you strive to make an impact in the lives of children and families the agency, Family Development Services which holds the Head Start grant for Marion and Hamiliton counties does a good job of equipping low income families with a variety of resources. There is also a decent benefit package with a generous amount of time off and paid vacation days. The organization also has several high quality teachers. Lastly, the CEO is mission driven, family oriented and leads by example.

Cons

Lack of professionalism throughout the entire agency, inability to hire and retain qualified staff, malicious gossip amongst mid level managers, lack of communication from upper management down causing last minute notifications to staff and families (consequently resulting in upset parents!) micro management with little to now delegation amongst those whom are very qualified to handle tasks, lack of follow up/follow through and ethics from managers. If you want a true professional career where you feel valued, trusted to do the work you were hired to do, and genuinely enjoy reporting to work each day, look elsewhere for employment.

Horrible Management

Pros

Working with the kids is great. Potential to make a difference in underprivileged families' lives.

Cons

The place is managed badly, especially with the assistant directors. They micromanage to a ridiculous extent, yet don't provide any helpful feedback or support. Everything you do is wrong, even if you do exactly what you're told. Expectations are unreal.

Pros

If you are willing to parent and teach children who may not have their basic needs met (food, stability, shelter, clothes, etc), then you've found the right place. The kids may call you everything negative under the sun but will be waiting for you when you come in the next day. Some teachers, assistants, FCEs, and directors are wonderful. If your working with preschool age, you have plenty of vacation time. Plenty of positions available.

Cons

You must follow the curriculum boundaries set for you, and expect to receive little to no money for curriculum supporting material. Feedback is not received kindly. Sometimes you receive no response from higher ups after multiple requests, yet you will be disciplined for making a decision at all. Your vacation time is only when they allow it (which isn't bad if you can make sure life doesn't happen outside of that window). Higher ups are never content with your work even though they made the blueprint for you to follow. Literally. Don't get me started on being disorganized. If any teacher was even a tiny bit as disorganized as that team of people, we would not have a job. If you do not like to or are not accustom to large quantities of paperwork being completed daily as a teacher or employee, think twice before applying. Turnover is ridiculous on all levels, therefore, quality of work of those hired is questionable due to the need to meet classroom ratio requirements.
