Pros

They paid me a decent wage and they take the whole team out to Thai food on Fridays. The atmosphere is mostly laid back and mostly everyone who works there is genuinely nice and talented.

Cons

The CEO is involved in every aspect of the company, asking individuals to perform tasks outside of their ticketing system. You are told on your first day that you are expected to work more than 40 hours each week, while a given it seems like an odd assertion of power. It took over a month to receive my first paycheck, which makes switching jobs very difficult. You are drinking from a fire hose of tickets, expect to be closing tickets non-stop from start to finish, you have no time to research issues.

Nepotism at it's finest

Pros

There is a laid back working environment. Dress code is very relaxed. Paid parking in downtown. There are some very good employees that work here.

Cons

Low salary. Focus is below the average in salary. Nepotism runs rampant here. If you brown nose or are friends with the powers that be, then you are set. People have been giving promotions to positions that they have absolutely no business being in. Some employees are blamed for the incompetence of others.

Dear Anonymous Employee, I would like to start off by saying that I am very sorry to hear of your negative feedback. We do value all of our employees and their opinions we welcome any feedback you can bring to our attention. We encourage all employees to voice their opinions if they don’t agree with a policy or feel that they or others are being treated unfairly. I have an open door policy and would love to discuss these issues with you. I would have to disagree with you in regards to salary not being up to par with the industry, as our annual increases are generally 2-3 times the national average. We at Focus are very big on having a team environment within the office which is why we try to minimize the amount of employees working from home. Please understand that the offer letter you signed and accepted stated that you would be working 40 hours per week in the office. We do understand that some circumstances warrant it, and is determined on a case-by-case basis if it is deemed necessary. Some jobs however cannot be performed from home based on the job duties it entails. We hope that this addresses your issues and concerns. If there is more that needs to be brought to my attention, please feel free to let me know. Steven Harnois, Director of Operations

"OK" is the inside joke for the company

Pros

* Decent culture (education-focused, laid back work-place) * Free food once a week, social time * large office * meets your office requests (computer, keyboard, monitor etc whatever you want within reason) * great location * great stepping stone to bigger opportunities

Cons

* idiotic management with zero tech experience (hello your entire product is tech) * no direction whatsoever (nobody knows what is going on, ever) * management/CEO derides and insults employees * pure focus on development, systems viewed as a blocker * CEO's first job was writing the joke-of-a software his first company is based off of * "on call" means work whenever the CEO asks, even if it is on your day off * amount of work is rewarded instead of quality or being "done right" (IE bad code is rewarded over good code) * "senior" staff is a bunch of mediocre wannabe developers who wrote some javascript once and now lead entire projects * compensation is on par with a warehouse job with amazon, on the high end * new "going live" client going to ruin the company because they refuse to update to modern standards * favoritism is so strong it is insulting ~ Steven H. is excluded from my review of management, he is a glimmering star of hard-working hope in this desolate wasteland of mistakes.

Dear Anonymous employee, I am very sorry to hear that you have were unhappy with your job. At Focus we value our employees and want to provide a happy and comfortable work environment at all times. This is why we hold team-building activities such as paid lunches every Friday, the annual Rays baseball game, an annual Christmas party, and set up an employee game room. I have an open door policy and when someone is upset about something, whether they feel over worked, underpaid or that they or others are treated unfairly, I want it to be brought to my attention. We want you to be happy and if you are not, come talk to me and I personally will be happy to help change that. We have serious commitments to our clients, and we do expect a lot out of our staff. Those who want to do the bare minimum will not likely succeed at Focus. As far as holding the opinion that the developers on staff are mediocre, that is unfortunate to hear. At Focus we look for employees that not only hold a lot of information and knowledge in software development and education, but like our company we want the people to be receptive and willing to continue to learn and grow as our company grows.
