Shady management, no security.

Pros

Futurex does sit on a gorgeous “campus”, featuring some really nice amenities. Their benefits package is generous and they seem to care about their employee’s health. That being said, they are not Google, or Rackspace, or IBM. They are a tiny company nestled in Nowhere, TX and corporate seems to enjoy the privacy.

Cons

Be advised - Futurex is a poorly-managed company that is hiding beneath a thin mask of being a ‘startup’ company. To be sure, the product is solid and the engineering team is top-notch - I have no qualms about Futurex’s services offered, but the company itself is deeply flawed. You may notice some very polarizing views posted here on Glassdoor. Most of the positive reviews have been posted by the marketing team under the protection of anonymity and are posted directly after negative reviews in an attempt to drown them out. You’ll notice they include little ‘jabs’ that are actually compliments, “More console games in the break room please,” and the like. “I’m so excited we got Best Places to Work seven years in a row,” is not something an actual employee would take the initiative to go and write on Glassdoor, let alone more than one. Some of the reviews have been discounted as being from a disgruntled employee, but they all have a note of truth to them. Everything is pitched to you as an amazing privilege, as though you are signing on to this amazing ‘startup’ culture company with enough financial security to make real change. Don’t be fooled. You are not going to have massive roundtables with your coworkers, you are not going to have a schedule with relative freedom, you are not going to have a funky and unique work environment. You will have a cubicle, in a portable building, where no one talks to each other unless it’s lunch time, and if they socialize too much, they become paranoid. A coworker of mine started keeping track of her socializing and bathroom breaks because she was told she ‘walked around too much’. All of the reviews here that talk about the extremely competitive nature of Futurex are correct, but all of that talk about a challenging work environment just becomes a convenient hiding spot when an employee can’t “cut it”. Personalization, cooperation and collaboration are actively discouraged. Every second you aren’t working is wasted time. The turnover rate at Futurex is alarmingly high. Employees come and go regularly, and are fired for exceedingly minor reasons. Because the encryption work is sensitive, these firings happen quickly and quietly, but ex-employees are frequently trash-talked by corporate at meetings. It’s my understanding that some departments are better than others, but you are not safe, even if you’ve worked there for more than two years. Not everyone that works in upper-management at Futurex contributes to this level of toxic work environment, but in my opinion it isn’t worth the mental toll to work at this company. I trust them with my data, but not with my life.

Futurex encourages employee participation on Glassdoor but have never directed an employee to post a review. We strongly adhere to the rules of the Glassdoor community. We are proud that our employees are the only reason why our company has been named one of San Antonio’s Best Places to Work for seven years in a row based on a completely independent and anonymous survey given to our employees each year. We have deeply dedicated employees who work with some of the most sophisticated technology in the world and have many other options for employment. Futurex has enjoyed double-digit growth for over five consecutive years, strong profitability, expansion in the international markets, and enterprise level adoption of our new cloud service VirtuCrypt. As a result of our growth we have dramatically increased our hiring and are recruiting in all departments. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of encryption technology and our corporate pace, we occasionally lose staff and some use Glassdoor to disparage our company after they leave. We encourage interested applicants to compare the comments in all Glassdoor postings with the actual opinions of current employees during the interview process. We are confident the perspective will be much different from a member of our team who is performing their job and enjoys working for a successful company with best perks and benefits in the industry. The comments in this post are written in such a way to cast doubt upon every positive review and give purpose to each negative review and are without merit. In keeping with the guidelines established by the Glassdoor community, we will not comment further other than to highlight there is a common theme to this negative review that defies logic and common sense given the company’s success and depth of tenured and talented employees. We regret that this individual chose to use the anonymity of Glassdoor to author misleading and hurtful comments about our company. However, we understand that a disgruntled employee can post false reviews using alias accounts against any employer they want to disparage. As a company, we focus on the independent survey of our staff each year and the acknowledgements we receive from the business community and industry which are quantifiable, tangible, and objective.

Pros

Very hard to identify pros for this tiny company that is ruled by a man who changes business direction every few months.

Cons

Leadership is non-existent, the owner has the leads living in fear and they defer to him as to ensure he maintains full decision making. Very stifling and unhealthy culture.

It’s very suspect that this post was written by a “former software engineer”, given that we haven’t had any leave the company in years…

Pros

Decent enough pay. If you live far enough away from Bulverde, they may pay you to drive down and interview, and they pay for your relocation expenses if you get hired. Decent benefits. Most of the immediate co-workers are really decent and level-headed. There are free drinks and snacks in the snack machine. Sometimes they'll bring food trucks onto campus, with all food paid for on the company dime. Free Spurs tickets. They'll brag about that endlessly. You won't get to see any games with the pandemic going on, though. You get a free placard with your name on it when you begin, and a box of company paraphernalia. Everyone got AirPods from the company as a Christmas gift in 2020. They will typically let you know whenever you are exposed to Covid from someone who sits near you. That's "nice."

Cons

Prepare to be unhappy a month in, and prepare to be looking for a new job two months in. The Covid policy is virtually nonexistent, and masks are not enforced. All employees got to work remotely in March 2020; this lasted about a month and a half until we were ordered back into the office by the CEO for no apparent reason. After that, Covid exposure occurred multiple times, and it was like pulling teeth to get to work remotely each time. There were multiple company get-togethers in enclosed spaces where a bunch of folks didn't wear masks. The CEO rarely (if ever) wears a mask in meetings or at gatherings. There are so many people walking around without masks, potentially spreading the virus, and the C-suite just doesn't seem to care. There is ZERO product training. It is unfathomable why this company thinks it's okay to give their documentation folks no baseline knowledge of their products, especially if one's background is NOT in cryptography. The only "training" is a fifteen minute overview of the API structure (if you're lucky). Instead, one will be expected to instead bother the overworked Solutions Architect team, which would could be helpful if you even know what questions to ask. There is a lot of bullying and micromanagement. Prepare to be lambasted for not being "up to standards" (which is unfair given the lack of training), told that the C-suite will "be mean and ask a bunch of really tough questions" (they don't), constantly told that any meeting you present in is an abject disaster (even though they aren't), and have all ideas for improvement dismissed hand over foot. They don't want you to do things on your own; they want a subservient flunkie. Your workload will be stacked. Your estimated hours will be reduced to something "more acceptable," then you will be given more work. And this will begin about a month in, when you will finally have barely even gotten first access to one of the products. You will get thrown under the bus because of your lack of knowledge. If you miss an assignment because of your lack of training or lack of useful guidance, it will be held over your head. Prepare for verbal threats against your job -- meaning, your health insurance and livelihood -- with a SMILE, for egregious sins such as misremembering API commands off the top of your head. These threats can and do happen IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC. Highly immoral, and you can't not take it personally. Turnover is ridiculous; most people quit, but Futurex also fired an employee right after they came back from being sick with Covid. The products are mismanaged and not user-friendly (from all appearances, there are no certified PMP's on staff), the C-suite are dictatorial but focused on inconsequential nonsense (can't see the forest for the trees), all of the C-suite are workaholics (and expect it of their underlings), and no one communicates efficiently, adding stress to the job; you will have no idea what you are expected to know at any given moment. They are proudly "at will," and the employee handbook is a draconian list of "do nots" that says they can fire you for perceived slights like discussing your pay with coworkers. The campus is not ADA compliant at all. There is no dedicated on-site IT department. You will be reliant on employees whose secondary task is IT, and it is a pain chasing down who does what. Also, the C-suite does not consider you a person. You are a "resource." An easily replaceable cog in the machine. All of it adds up to a de-motivational and toxic working environment. It will take a VERY negative toll on your mental health and emotional well-being. If you go into Futurex with optimism and enthusiasm, the powers-that-be will annihilate that.
