Pros

Small Town company with big city company aspirations. The company continues to grow. It offers a third niche market that supports their "loss leaders." Underwriting is too conservative at times but willing to go backwards to be profitable.

Cons

Upper management is always hired from outside the company. if you want to work your way to the top forget it. Frequently VP's are hired in from other companies where they were let go, going to be let go or being moved out. HMI is their last choice and they will take a pay cut to have a job. If you want to get rich this isn't the place. Extremely conservative company. On the day you retire all you get is a handshake. You are not paid enough to raise a family AND fund your retirement account, especially if you suffer a market crash along the way. Women still have a glass ceiling. Equal pay for equal pay is nonexistent. Women maybe 20% or more below?

While we appreciate the feedback and the positive outlook that you have on our company, we do feel compelled to refute a couple of the claims that you made in your review regarding retirees, retirement accounts, and equal pay for men and women. Hastings Mutual Insurance Company is proud of the way that we honour our retirees. Each eligible retiree is offered the opportunity to have a retirement celebration if they so choose and we also hold an annual Retiree's Day where we celebrate those that have retired. We also pride ourselves on having a highly competitive 401(k) program and Employer Contribution to help our employees reach their retirement goals. Each employee is encouraged to participate in the program. Regarding equal pay, we work very hard to make sure that the salaries that we pay reflect the talent and productivity that is expected of our employees regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or any other attribute outside of talent and performance. Again, thank you for your feedback!

Pros

Excellent program for attaining professional designations through the Institutes. Good work-life balance.

Cons

Complete lack of direction from executive team. Executives are heavy in management but light in leadership experience, so they micromanage everything. Complete inability to execute on any projects; partly due to an inept IT department and partly due to executive management's extreme fear of progressive change. Management team is very risk averse, partly because they don't understand the difference between individual risk and collective risk.
