Pros

Flexibilities like working from home and no set hours. The staff is all very smart and accomplished. Some staff really are passionate about the work and are compassionate toward others.

Cons

The firm has been around for 35 years since 1985 and has only grown to 300 staff and 100M dollars. Nepotism and favoritism are pillars in the HMA structure. Leadership is all friends who have been at the from nearly the beginning and are committed to hiring their friends (over 75% white) into an old structure that hasn't been adapted to the changing staff demographic or the change in times. Not for people of color. POC had their salaries cut and no DEI investments occurred at peak COVID while the firm continued to hire other staff and acquire other firms. The firm is very expensive and has a loss/win rate of 70/30. The rate structure also out-prices staff from working with clients they have the skills to support. The firm is competitive both externally and internally and staff finds themselves begging for work internally. The firm has no mission or vision statement. Leadership was silent during the murders of Amaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd and posted no internal or external position statement. After staff outpour to hire an external DEI consultant leadership team formed a small team of less than 5% of the firm to non-transparently "do work" on DEI initiatives and turned it into an irresponsible revenue-generating mechanism. Pay is non-competitive for junior staff - capping salaries for even those with master degrees at $55K with no path for promotion.

Pros

Competitive Salary; Work from Home; Annual Bonus and Pay Increase; Flexible Hours; Smart and Competent Colleagues; Transparent and Collegial Work Environment HMA is a place where your work ethic will determine your experience. If you work hard, you will be rewarded with an extremely competitive salary, annual bonuses, pay increases, 100% autonomy over your work schedule and choice of projects. If you do not work hard, you will not be happy and you will not last. Outside of the competitive pay, the best thing about HMA is that it is a "flat" organization without multiple layers of bureaucracy. I worked as a Senior Consultant, which is "mid-level" position, yet I had the cell phone numbers of Executive Leadership and could get them on the phone at any time of day or night, including weekends. If you have a good idea, your idea is heard, regardless of your position, tenure, age, gender, race/ethnicity, etc. You don't have to "ask for permission" to take an action on a good idea. As a person of color, HMA was empathetic and respectful towards me during the social unrest of 2020. My ideas and perspectives were solicited and amplified by Leadership. I was able to engage in transparent discussions with Leadership about the social unrest while making a tangible positive impact inside of the organization. This could not happen anywhere else. I have colleagues whose employers never even recognized the social unrest. HMA's Leadership and HR are extremely transparent and are committed to growing HMA and its employees. Whether you stay for 2 years or 20 years, working at HMA will help equip you with knowledge, skills, experiences and relationships/network which will make you more marketable than before you arrived. Bottom line, if you are about making the world a better place and making a lot of money while doing it, then HMA is the place to be. You will have the opportunity to make tangible, real-time and real-world impact...and make some real money while doing it :)

Cons

Not really a "con", but it is imperative that you are disciplined and have a strong work ethic to succeed.

Pros

Independence to pursue your own business. Whip smart colleagues. Some amazing large projects.

Cons

Each office has its own practices and culture, many are dysfunctional while a few foster mutual business development. Very high billable rates and high billable requirements can lead consultants to sacrifice quality for the bottom line. Or sacrifice their well being by working uncredited hours to get the job done right.
