Pros

Small company of about 20 people. The company had a close and friendly culture. Projects were large in scale for such a small team.

Cons

Owner is resistant to innovation, and controls everything. Too much micromanagement led to wasteful decision making. The owner's hostile mentality made most employees useless as they couldn't express what they thought was the right thing to do. Very low pay, but not surprised because the owner tends to scrap employees' work and doing it himself.

Pros

Learned a great deal about the professions of landscape architecture (design of public spaces) and the contracting profession (building side of the landscape architecture design). Worked on both the Landscape Architect magazine and the Landscape Contractor publication, but was the managing editor of Landscape Architect for most of my 15 years with the company. Enjoyed selecting projects from landscape architecture firms around the country, and writing features, columns and news each month. Also enjoyed the travel associated with the work.

Cons

The editorial team was periodically understaffed for long periods of time.
