Pros

Lots of opportunity to learn new skills. Small business culture with ample opportunity for time off. Great job security. If you can make it for at least a year, it's a very strong resume builder.

Cons

"Ample opportunity for time off" - there's a huge absenteeism problem. No one can be relied on. There is little to no coaching, and management plays favorites in a very obvious way. Other cons: ~ low pay ~ no paid time off (I understand they recently added some holidays. That's a plus considering that Christmas used to be the worst time of the year. Tons of unpaid days without the option to work on those days. Happy Holidays, here's half a paycheck, but aren't you so lucky to have the day off?) ~ overworking capable employees ~ allowing incapable employees to stay on indefinitely, hoping they might leave instead of actually taking advantage of being a right to work state. ~ very stressful with few rewarding moments ~ empty promises ~ "small business culture" - lots of bad behavior that's ignored

Comfortable, Positive Work Environment

Pros

I love working for Lawyer's Aid Service because of the positive work environment. The managers are very approachable and accommodating. Employees have their own desks (no cubicles!) and some flexibility in terms of work schedule. I feel that I am being paid fairly for my time, and there are paid holidays. Because it is such small office, cross training is encouraged, which makes LAS a great learning opportunity for recent graduates like myself. New employees have some say in their training schedule, so it was a very comfortable transition.

Cons

Lawyer's Aid Service if a fragrance-free work environment (for the owner's health). There are rules about which personal care products employees are able to use. However, they did provide me with samples when I began working there to help me adjust.

We much appreciate your telling us—and the world—about what you like and don’t like We aim to provide accommodation in any way that’s practical to people who need it and offer 100% employer-paid health insurance to employees working 30-32 hours a week. The only rule about personal products is that you use fragrance-free types. We provide a list of many brands, a starter set, and products at no cost upon request. The owner appreciates your accommodating his sensitivity to odor chemicals.

Pros

If you're a college student, they're extremely flexible with hours and will even let you take a day off for school ( I have coworkers that take off TTh). The pay is great considering the work, and you always have weekends and evenings off. The people you'll work with are great, and the office environment is very laid back. And you get PTO! Looks great on a law school application, and most of my coworkers have gone on to law school. I personally loved my time here.

Cons

Upper management does not hear employee concerns, and on multiple occasions has split a departing employee's workload amongst the office instead of hiring a new employee, so everyone's job gets more difficult over time. Also, the job you applied for may not be the job you end up doing: you may be asked to move around for the good of the company. Their hiring process is unorthodox and eliminates candidates without high test scores or GPAs, so be aware when applying. The makeup of the office as a result (whether intentional or not) is very lacking in diversity. No opportunities for advancement, just the same thing every single day. Great for a couple years in college, but not a good long-term gig.
