Toxic Environment

Pros

Location near the soon-to-be Bucks arena. Development team are very capable, talented and team-driven. Rapport among coworkers.

Cons

No work/life balance. Long hours into the nights and weekends. Uncomfortable and anxiety-ridden workplace due to CEO (Brody)'s consistent discourteous and arrogant behavior. He micromanages all aspects of the team, and really interferes with anyone being able to complete their assigned jobs. Many of us were coerced into leaving positive reviews, but this is a true warning to not fall for the promises and if you value your career to choose a position at an established Milwaukee agency.

Since 2018 Layer One has hired a new CEO that is creating a transparent, honest, and humble culture with a hybrid work environment. The goal was to hire people based on the ability to create results and not hours in the office. He wants to hire people that take responsibility for their own desk and have a passion for learning and growing in this space. In 2019 a HR leader was brought in to manage the people operations side of the business as well.

Layer One has gone through quite the transformation since 2017 and with new leadership the main goal has been to create a great team that comes first. The advice given here is great and spot on, the need for change was seen, heard, and accomplished. We appreciate the honesty in this review, and we pride ourselves on just that now, an honest, transparent organization that puts people first. We think we have done a good job addressing your concerns and winning Best Places To Work two years in a row confirms that.

Pros

There are some very nice people employed there. Free parking when available.

Cons

Leadership style is that of a fear approach. Lack of true and mutual respect. Micromanaging owner. Irresponsible waterfall and cold-call approach business plan. No trace of a culture. No real perks. Bad area next to projects. Building has little character except the common lounge which is monitored by the owner 24/7 via a Nest camera.

Since 2018, Layer one has hired new leadership, both a new CEO and Director of Development. The idea around these hires was to create a better development experience for clients and build an open, healthy culture. The team runs all projects in an agile manner with fluid communication and ongoing learning. With our hybrid work environment, a candid and transparent culture, we are trending in the right direction and have had steady growth over the last few years even with the pandemic.
