Pros

Benefits, good friendly environment, good looking people. Free food, if you're into that.

Cons

If you are trying to build a career go elsewhere. You can work at Levelup and make up a fancy fake title and pretend to be VP of this or that but the rest of the real world knows you work at a summer camp. The company is in a huge hole of venture cash. Seems like close to $50MM raised and revenues are maybe $2mm. Let's do some quick math and see what will happen. The last two rounds have not been announced because they are down rounds, The CEO and management believe that you can read a book and become an expert instead of hiring real adults. DO NOT WORK HERE.

Pros

You will work with some of the smartest, funniest people ever. There is never a dull moment, you will never be bored. It is a challenging, fast paced environment that never ceases to keep you on your toes. Snack closet is on point and they have kombucha on tap. Benefits are not what they were before the Grubhub acquisition, but they are still good. Managers are given a lot of freedom to run their teams the way they want. Micromanagement is non-existent, mostly people because don’t have time to. For the most part, it is a company of really good, passionate people.

Cons

Upper management has a tough time communicating with one another and communicating down to middle management and the rest of the company. The acquisition with Grubhub was not smooth and the company has seen a lot of attrition. This is to be expected, but the way certain things were handled was pretty poor. People crush themselves at the company and there isn’t a lot of appreciation from the top for that effort - all of the appreciation comes from your peers and middle management. It feels as though the magic and culture of LevelUp is being stripped away with the acquisition which is sad to see, though expected. It will be interesting to see what the company and culture looks like once the dust settles. Loyalty is paramount to the CEO. I saw many folks from middle and upper management leave post acquisition and despite the endless hours and effort a lot of these people put into the company, helping to build the teams and culture and talent that really positioned us to be acquired, there was no expressed appreciation from the CEO as these people left. This could also be a product of the fact that this is a true engineering organization, run by engineers, and the people aspect of running a business sometimes gets lost.

Pros

Free lunch, awesome PTO, transportation per diem, awesome people to work with, decent life/work balance. Some opportunities to work on some really challenging engineering work. The product and business space is really cool, and the company is good at having meetings to explain how all departments work. A few good engineering values, such as quality through automated testing and making sure the best API possible would be built.

Cons

As an engineer this was one role where I felt least creative. There's almost zero collaboration when building the product, from working with fellow engineers or designers and product management. Most engineers were very much in a "headphones on, don't bother me" mindset. For as much as they boasted shipping quickly and often, building product was slow and shipping was even slower. Management was non-existent, and when improvements were suggested they were brushed off. CEO tried to be too involved and micromanage everything about how the product was being built. CTO boasted how great it is that each team can do what they want to be productive, but that didn't work. I'm not even really sure what he contributed to the department.
