Pros

This review is as unbiased and professional as possible while still maintaining anonymity. - Great people. The team at MAD Security is one of the most talented and professional teams with which I've worked. - Great accessibility. Being hybrid for, at maximum, two days a week forced collaboration across all levels of the company at very quick and responsive rates. - A needed service. MAD Security, as a managed security service provider, does indeed provide services deemed critical to the Department of Defense's infrastructure. It is not unneeded, and the outlook of the business portion of the business is generally positive. - Growth potential. MAD Security is in a wonderfully explosive industry and has potential to be incredibly successful with the right management. - Candor with superiors. MAD Security does a very good job having friendly relationships with superiors and subordinates, and switching on to a professional hat when necessary.

Cons

This section of the review, I am mincing as best as possible to avoid potential retaliation or hand-waving away the very real problems MAD Security faces/likely continues to face at the time of my separation. - Leadership. From the top line, there is a pervasive and very real problem that leadership faces, while in my tenure was never addressed. Sometime in 2021, three directors of the company exited. I will elaborate on the impact of this further in my review. Of course, MAD Security would not want its employees to leave, but to their credit, sometimes it is advantageous for both parties to part ways. I believe this was the case for the three directors, but the impact left by their departure is where this issue lay. - Potential Astroturfing. Many of the reviews on here are extremely positive. With turnover in 2021/2022 alone (22 people) for various reasons (again, I will elaborate further in its own section) there is doubt the rainbows and butterflies portrayed here and the positive reviews that pop up shortly after a negative one are legitimate. - Culture. Culture is something MAD Security prides itself upon and is spoken as a holy body of text to abide by, yet the culture has changed drastically with leadership not adapting appropriately. A culture of "always on" and "winning" (read: Startup culture) works if there is buy-in. There is no stock option, no real give and take for feedback, and no way for the employees to actually safely and positively give honest, transparent feedback. This does not even mention the blatant sexist, casually racist, homophobic, and ageist remarks that occur in the business. (To sound like a broken record, again, I will revisit the culture aspect in another section.) - Feedback welcome, but also not really. When an employee attempts to give open and honest feedback, leadership falls victim to the very thing that causes most issues in communication. There is little to no active listening - almost every piece of feedback is met with an innocuous "What do you mean by that?" When you attempt to explain, you are seldom heard, as the leadership is comprised of "fixers" (a good thing for a leadership team!) They will say something akin to, "Okay, just so I understand, you really mean x." After a few rounds of this back and forth, it becomes so exhausting that there is little use in continuing the conversation. I am separating this one out because I am not intending to dissuade anyone from joining MAD Security. I am writing this review to help genuinely inform and potentially provide transparent feedback without a filter which I did not have an option to do in my tenure. The biggest problems facing MAD Security are Turnover and Pay. - Turnover. Of the 22 mentioned, 3 were directors, 1 was a consultant, 3 were security engineers, 1 was an accountant, 1 was an operations person, 11 were sales staff (to MAD's credit, I believe sales in general typically has high turnover in any business.) The company at its largest was 32-35 people. That's a 62% turnover rate against the maximum size of the business at any given point. - Pay. The pay is simply noncompetitive. The benefits changed when mid-year, MAD Security changed PEO providers. On average, healthcare costs went up, 401k matching went down. At some point, the company attempted (read: Successfully did so) to change several positions to hourly, presumably as a punitive measure for utilizing the benefits bragging point: Unlimited PTO. Unlimited PTO was an enormous burden when taken and there was no guarantee PTO would be respected as you would likely still receive calls, texts, and emails that needed an urgent reply. In general, PTO was discouraged, and was an inconvenience. Before I get into the "Why," I must first address what I am CERTAIN is forthcoming in a comment reply from the company. The company operates on something called "EOS." For those unfamiliar, this is the "Entrepreneurial Operating System." There is a moment where this is supposed to happen, when a company is maturing. They speak to "right butt, right seat." I am unsure how specifically this will be utilized in a reply, but there's a definitive possibility it's used to hand-wave away the turnover. Do not let it. In order to grow, there must be accountability and discomfort. I am hopeful this review will do just that. In late 2021, all three directors quit. This marked an important tipping point in the MAD Security culture. There was a quarterly business review that, as I understand it, resulted in a significant falling out with leadership, and as a result, all directors quit. There is likely something that comes to discredit this, but the long and short of the ultimate quitting of these directors started there. The rest of the MAD Staff, obviously shaken, enquired about the directors quitting. The response given, at almost every level, was "Oh, well, they all hit their ceilings for potential." That would be fair, if it had not been back to back to back in the span of about a month. Another thing said was "Oh, they couldn't handle the stress of the job." I will let the reader do with this what they wish, as I will not tell you how to interpret these events or the double sided explanations. Never having a clear answer, it became almost "taboo" to talk about them. There was an obvious shift that if the company had been honest and upfront about the directors leaving, likely would not have happened. Now, it may be claimed their replacements are rockstars or are really "right butt, right seat." I am not disagreeing. It is not the story I am trying to tell. Three directors left, and then the revolving door kept swinging. Many of the individuals that kept the "MAD culture" going are now gone. Again, do with this what you will. All in all, the company has lost at least 24 years of professional knowledge from the directors, and possibly 3 or 4 decades worth from the rest. Finally: - The Retribution. No good deed goes unpunished. I am aware that when a review is posted, internally, the company attempts to figure out who left the review, contact them, potentially ask them to remove the review, and ask to "talk it out." I am not interested in that. I am interested in saying my piece in a manner where a narrative cannot be constructed about my words and where I can be honest, transparent, and comfortable with my feedback without worrying about an impending call from leadership.

Trust but Validate – Passionate Assertion doesn’t imply Factual or Accurate. I am the President of MAD Security, and I normally would not spend much time or effort responding to a narrative that is themed, littered with inaccuracies, and presented in the manner that this feedback has been presented in a public forum with clear intent to discredit and disrepute. I tend to let actions and results speak for themselves. However, in this situation I realized how unfair it is for the current MAD Security employees to be depicted as a part of a culture described in the poster’s feedback. The poster presents their beliefs and position from a viewpoint founded in passionate assertions and not necessarily the facts or the complete truth under a perceived anonymous veil. In a company our size and with the relationships our team members have with each other remaining anonymous in this forum and with this post is impossible. However frustrated I currently am with this poster, I still do not hold any ill will towards them and wish them the best in their future endeavors. MAD Security has experienced substantial and downright aggressive growth in the last few years – going from 18 employees to 35 in just over a 12-month period and increasing revenue by over 400% in that time. Anyone that has experienced growth of this magnitude understands that it is tremendously exciting but at the same time comes with its own set of unique complications. During this time of growth, plenty of mistakes, errors, and issues occurred—just as plenty of wins, accomplishments, and solutions occurred. All businesses experience trials; it is the response to them that matters. The MAD Security team has done and continues to do an extraordinary job not only keeping the wheels on the bus, but turning our bus into a magnificent rocket ship! Sure, hiring mistakes were made, coaching mistakes were made, all sorts of mistakes were made; however, as we speak, the MAD Security team is flying in high spirts and accomplishing our goals at astonishing speeds with extraordinary results. The team addresses each issue, mistake, and complication as they arise with diligence, decisiveness, and effective execution. I personally couldn’t be prouder of the MAD Security team--they are truly second to none. I personally would like to address each and every misrepresentation, inaccuracy, and in several cases fabricated information; however, Glassdoor limits all responses to 5,000 characters. Case in point, the poster makes an alarmingly gross and disgusting statement about “blatant sexist, casually racist, homophobic, and ageist” remarks occurring in our business; however, they never provide any substance to support this claim. This statement troubles me greatly, as it doesn’t just attack me and my leadership team, but seriously attacks every single team member at MAD Security by implying everyone accepts this type of behavior and participates in it. Nothing could be further from the truth and with a PEO in place, our team members have a third party to report any behavior of this type which would in turn spawn a third-party unbiased investigation. With 36 employees and the culture we have established and core values being lived daily, I am confident this type of behavior would be reported and I assure you handled quickly and decisively. In that same light the poster is correct about MAD Security using EOS, which is used by over 80,000 other companies and it is far from handwaving. We do use the term “Right Person/Right Seat”, which means someone is the “Right Person” if they exhibit our core values, Right Seat is if they get it, want it, and have the capacity to fulfil their role in our company. We would never refer to this as “Right butt, right seat” as the poster does, as that objectifies and diminishes a tool we respect. This tool, our three-strike rule, and the consistent living of our core values is why the poster is no longer with our team. If you are considering engaging us, but this review troubles you or causes you concern (or even pause), I highly recommend you engage us directly and ask the tough questions and express your concerns. The MAD Security team will have no issues in addressing your questions and concerns as our culture is very much transparent and founded in core values that include passion for high standards and constant improvement, accountability, professionalism, collaboration, and integrity. Could not agree with you more, self-teaching is not the only way people learn! MAD Security has undergone many changes in the last 12 months, and we take employee suggestions very seriously. We now provide operational training for our employees to become more proficient in their profession, and we recently enacted professional development plans for every business unit within MAD Security. These development plans align with our rapid growth to ensure every employee has the opportunity to not only be trained in their current role, but to be trained and mentored in real time for new roles being created and defined as MAD Security grows. All that being said, MAD Security is a rapid moving company and as others have pointed out we are not for everyone. Our expectations on training and learning is that our employees not only rely on us to guide and provide, but aggressively seek it out by all means necessary to be the best version of themselves they can be. Our people are very driven and have become accustomed to learning new things every day. Which by the way is one of many reasons our customers tend to be lifelong customers!

Thank you for taking the time to write MAD Security a review on Glassdoor. It is important for us to hear what we are doing well and what we need to improve upon. We are not accustomed to receiving one star reviews, as you can see from our previous reviews, so we too are disappointed that your experience while working here was unsatisfactory. We failed somewhere along the line. We never hire someone with the intent of providing an unsatisfactory experience, so we appreciate the opportunity to improve. Our hiring process is very much focused on placing the right people in the right seats in order to position every employee and our company for success. We operate our company using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS: https://www.eosworldwide.com/) and implement the People Analyzer for evaluating and coaching our people. This process is well known for its effectiveness and in some cases results in identifying that our company and a person is not a good fit, for reasons that are neither the individual’s fault nor our company’s. In these cases, the process typically takes about 90-120 days, (and definitely less than a year), to identify mismatches. In those cases, our separation is normally done under satisfactory and in very positive terms, so again we are saddened to hear that this was not the case with you. We are going to take a step back and review what we may have missed in your case, as you have noted several specific “cons” in your review. The specific cons you have listed here trouble us greatly, as we have spent significant effort building and maintaining a cohesive leadership team and create overall organizational clarity. We feel as though by adopting EOS about three and a half years ago we have been successful in providing clear vision, traction, and organization for our people resulting in all our people rowing in the same direction. After every quarterly Leadership Team meeting, a comprehensive address by our President is performed to the entire company on what our specific objectives are and where we stand in meeting them. This includes our 90-day objectives, our one plan, the three picture, and our ten year target. Quarterly addresses last approximately an hour and questions and answers are encouraged. These are recorded, and a link to the recording is sent out in case someone was unable to attend live or wishes to review it after the fact again for clarity. We are actively reviewing your situation to better understand how this process was not received and not understood by you in your tenure with us. We strive very hard to ensure our annual and quarterly offsite business reviews address the cons you have listed above, but specifically in your position as a Sales Account Executive. We know from our many years of existence that being a Sales Executive has its own set of obstacles and pressures. We invest heavily to remove the obstacles by not only conducting offsite business reviews which contain a substantial amount of training, but by bringing in outside sales training services for multi-day training sessions that are delivered annually to our team. We recently under your tenure added Mike Weinberg’s online sales training modules and are currently working as a group, with weekly meetings and trainings, to cover the principles within his book New Sales Simplified to expand our investment in our sales executives’ success. All in all, I personally, appreciate your feedback and have been reflecting on it. I can’t agree with the overall premise of it and truly believe if you survey our people, they are highly motivated, understand our strategy, and are appreciative of the amount of effort we put into these areas. However, I have learned in life that there are blind spots, and I will continue to reflect on your feedback and seek out identifying issues that might result in the unsatisfaction you have expressed. I believe if you would have extended me the courtesy of conducting an exit interview versus simply submitting a resignation letter via email that was “effective immediately”, many of these grievances could have been addressed and may not have resulted in this review. I do wish you the very best in all your endeavors and if you do change your mind about having that exit interview to sit down with me and discuss I would be happy to facilitate it.
