Pros

A few good people working there in low level roles. Free coffee and tea. Some good courses available.

Cons

Very poor quality technical team leadership - the worst I've seen sadly. Long standing team members protect role by not sharing information. Huge number of Director level staff who would not be at that level in any other bank. Very high turnover of staff. Low investment in technology - for example, still using Solaris. Poor communications both within teams and between teams. Poor team morale. Large technical debt but this could be due to the low quality project management (Python won't save you).

Pros

Merrill is a challenging and fast moving environment. You work with smart, motivated people, occasionally on interesting problems. You usually get to see what you do have a real and almost immediate impact. Also, the 'interesting' management style (see below) does leave you with a lot of freedom. Oh, and not to forget, you can get paid dirty great piles of money.

Cons

The management style is sadly best described as Ready, Fire, Aim. The senior management is still recovering from a cleanup following the departure of Stan O'Neil, and in certain areas does not appear to be up to speed yet. Staff turnover is also high, perhaps higher than other industry members - I have heard Merrill Lynch described as a revolving door more than once.

Pros

Good exposure to different business areas, and the product set you are working with. Good stepping stone into investment banking.

Cons

Long hours spent doing the same thing every day. Pay is poor. There are no perks as there is no budget.
