Pros
Matching 401K, and good medical benefits. The company has strong roots in the local community, and contributes to charitable causes. They make a product that is marketable, and they are slightly better than their local competitors.
Cons
Much of the top level management have worked at the company for years, but lack the education, management ability, and diversity to be successful in such a roll. Lack of a formal quality policy and training program makes it brutally hard to be the new guy, especially if you are an outsider (not within the buddy circle). Easily set up for failure, and quick to be disciplined when you do. "Thrown to the wolves" is a common saying. Although the front office is a nice environment, most of the plant is dirty, cramped offices, and some of the bathrooms.....don't ask. Pay scale is lower than most other manufacturing companies in the area, and significantly lower than the larger mid-Michigan employers. Safety department is under-staffed/under-funded for a plant this size. Interdepartmental disorganization makes daily like hectic. The commute in the winter is wicked! Drifting snow, sheets of ice, hundreds of deer. Not the best utilization of a college degree, but if you start there right after high school, and plan to stay in the area, it might be as good an option as any.
