A great mission-driven organisation

Pros

Morningstar is full of good people who take a pride in their work and care about the company's mission to help investors reach their goals. This focus on putting the end investor first attracts people who care about more than simple commercial success. There is an inspiring culture of excellence in research and a passion for continued improvement in the products Morningstar produces. The culture is very open with a flat management structure and accessible senior managers

Cons

As a diverse business there can be competition for scarce resources which can lead to frustrations. The global nature of the business can make it difficult for team members to understand how different parts of the business fit together which can result in a silo mentality. Offices across several continents naturally results in conference calls at pretty unsocial hours.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts about Morningstar and our unique culture. You’re right, we’re a very mission-driven organization and most here find great energy and inspiration in our objective of helping investors achieve their financial goals. As you noted, operating a global company has it’s many challenges, including effective information-sharing and coordinating time zones, but it also opens doors to opportunities and experiences like international assignments. And, of course, it also gives us the platform to achieve our mission on a global scale. I appreciate your advice and I agree that preserving our culture is critical to continued long-term success. We’re doing a lot more these days to understand and monitor team members' perceptions of our work culture so that we can nurture what already makes us special and identify areas for improvement. If you have specific ideas or suggestions, please feel invited to reach out to me directly or to Mark, your UK CEO. It’s the enthusiasm and creative-thinking of people like you that will ensure we stay the kind of "great workplace" that brought you here originally and kept you here for many years.
