Pros

Students are highly motivated academically and socially. Teachers are well-supported with materials and professional development in most departments. Christian values are made of highest importance except in academic and educational foci. Staff are supportive and welcoming. Strong sense of community. Taichung is very accessible and inexpensive. Salary and travel based on number of people in family, compensating larger families. Money matched up to a certain amount for retirement investment.

Cons

Lots of gossip and secrets as is common in Christian organisations. Often can feel like a fish-bowl. Top-down leadership where the principal and superintendent are the authority on interpretations of faith and how that should be lived out. Suggestions carry the weight of authority. Teachers who do little very quietly can stay a long time. Salary is meagre, but sufficient. Favourites are clear and if you are not in then you have little recourse if something goes wrong (I have been on both sides of this) Strong encouragement to live a perfect Christian life externally without support for people to be sinners (school acts like a church while denying being a church).

Pros

Great work environment and phenomenal teachers and administrators. Absolutely loved it.

Cons

Chinese is truly the hardest language in the world - don't be depressed because you can't master it.

Pros

A very progressive school system integrating Bible, Chinese, computer literacy and integration, sports, and other activities along with an excellent, realistic US learning outcome based curriculum. Students are usually 2 years ahead of their stateside peers in math. High school graduates usually get offers from several colleges and universities. The employee education/evaluation system involving peer partner participation is one of the best we had experienced in several careers. The Board and Administration are highly concerned with employee morale and retention. Some employees are provided by Mission societies; others are direct hire from other countries, not just the USA. I left in 2004 only because my life radically changed; otherwise I would still be there. [The 2008 date below is incorrect but there was no 2004 choice.]

Cons

Don't expect a high salary like at the Taipei American School; Morrison bases their salaries on a different set of criteria. However, it takes into account living costs at each campus locale. It's best when both spouses are employed full-time on the campuses.
