Pros

The benefits are good, and most of the colleagues are supportive and great to work with. It can be nice sometimes when fun times are arranged on occasion.

Cons

Management plays favorites with certain directors who are given special treatment regardless of performance. It’s especially frustrating when these same directors are always absent — either on MC or on leave every other week — and provide little to no guidance or support even when they are around. When issues arise, the blame tends to fall on the team, even when the root cause is poor leadership. Being a fairly new mother can be difficult but it’s not an excuse to ignore your work responsibilities if you have them and are leading a team. Accountability is almost non-existent at the top management level. Management isn’t clear about next steps half the time leaving the team to find solutions. Mistakes are ignored, credit goes to the wrong people who are praised for their leadership - even though it’s nonexistent and those who genuinely put in the hard work end up shouldering more responsibilities. The culture makes the saying “the reward for hard work is more hard work” true.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I’m glad you find Mutant a great place to work and appreciate your acknowledgment of our supportive team culture. We also take your concerns seriously and wanted to share a bit more context. September was an especially demanding month across our teams, with overlapping projects and large-scale events, and a few unexpected absences that we know created additional strain. These moments are tough, but I’m proud of how everyone pulled together to deliver strong results and uphold our standards of work. Since then, we’ve been reviewing our client load, capacity planning, and support structures to ensure coverage remains consistent and teams continue to receive the guidance they need, even during fast-moving or high-pressure periods. Mutant has always been a performance-driven and flexible workplace, and we know that some leadership responsibilities or behind-the-scenes work may not always be visible to the wider team. Please know that any mistakes or performance issues with more senior staff are never ignored, but dealt with directly with the individual. Our directors and managers remain accountable for outcomes and are committed to supporting their teams. Promotions and recognition are based on clear criteria, measurable outcomes, and consistent contribution. Every Mutant has either been promoted within two years or supported along a clear growth path - and if at any point this doesn’t feel right for you, please reach out directly to Jacq or me for an open conversation. Our culture has always been built on transparency, trust, and mutual respect. Over the past year, we’ve invested in leadership training, clearer feedback practices, and open-door sessions to keep communication constructive and solutions-oriented. Thank you again for your honesty - feedback like this helps us identify where we can improve, and reminds us of what we must continue to protect: a workplace that’s collaborative, ambitious, and kind. If there’s ever something you’d like to raise directly, my door (and Slack) are always open. - Arch

Pros

They share salary ranges upfront & there are some good people on the working level

Cons

Huge toxic positivity type of workplace starting all the way from the top. Workload division is imbalanced, management is more likely to question your ability to “keep up” rather than offer real support. Their empathy feels performative, I have shared personal difficulties with my directors only to have that used against me later on. Structure is a mess. What is the point of having a SMART goals system when goals keep changing? People are stretched thin, we can never meet KPIs because new ones keep getting added on. There have been multiple layoffs and yet they keep expanding to new regions and talking about growth. They talk a lot about putting their people first. Maybe that was true once, but it’s the opposite of my experience. High performing staff are rewarded not by increments or promotions but with added responsibilities without the title. The whole “pitching for a promotion” thing exists but feels more like a gimmick for them to talk about for workplace awards instead of trying to proactively recognise talent. They implement new bonus structures only to change them later without clear explanations why. Training and mentorship is all done in house by management. There is no effort to get external trainers, even when that would be more beneficial (and requested). Mutant likes to talk a good game. It’s a shame they can’t live up to it.

Hi there, Thank you for your feedback. It's disheartening to hear this, and I’m truly sorry that your experience at Mutant wasn’t a great one. I’m personally looking into your feedback so we can be better for all Mutants. Our focus has always been on establishing a culture of care and helping each Mutant through various professional or personal struggles to get back on track. We have implemented several channels for everyone to communicate issues, such as the anonymous Mutant Safe Space forms, the bi-annual employee engagement survey, and various mentorships or additional 1-to-1 support for those who need extra help. That being said, it doesn’t mean we always get it right, which is why we offer many avenues for feedback. I am genuinely concerned about the toxic positivity comments, as we have never promoted an environment in which we expect anyone to reject difficult emotions or put on a facade that everything is always perfect. We don’t consider ourselves a family, but rather “one team” who can and will step in to support one another as necessary. I would very much like to better understand what personal struggles you shared that were then used against you, to ensure this isn’t a deeper issue. As you know, our business has grown significantly across all markets, but, like many agencies, there have also been a variety of challenges faced, with difficult decisions needing to be made. We are a high-performing agency, and unfortunately, employees who do not meet certain requirements may not pass their probation or may be let go. These are never decisions made lightly. On training, we have sent high performing and specialist staff on external workshops and programmes that match Mutant’s services, on top of internal training programs. We’re constantly learning and striving to do better - and have developed a training calendar to map opportunities transparently. I would appreciate it if you could drop me a note and spare some time for a chat so we can improve. Ping me anytime at lina@mutant.com.sg and we’ll keep our conversation confidential. Wishing you all the best in your career, Lina Marican, Regional Managing Director

Pros

I've been pushed but supported to develop as a professional in more ways than I can count. Smart goal setting and regular check ins have made it clear what I need to improve on and I've felt supported as I develop and grow in the business. They are proactive in supporting with career opportunity. Everyone makes mistakes at times and Mutant is the sort of place that handles them as learning opportunities. They will put support and training around you until you improve. I have been in work places where managers will scold or belittle you for mistakes and this is so much better. When I have had personal home difficulties they have been helpful and have treated it with empathy. They still expect results but they will be flexible and will give extra support as needed. Mutant has grown lots in the past few years and the profile of clients has grown lots. I've had exposure to working on some of the top brands alongside some kick-ass colleagues. The team. I've never felt this connection in a workplace before. You don't have to be everyones friend but you also can't really help it as they are all so genuine and welcoming. And while I don't know them all but it seems like they have the same culture in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Cons

Honestly nothing I can really write home about. At times it can get busy or stressful but never in a sustained way that feels unbearable. If I have a busy couple of months management will often flag it with me and proactively help to lighten the load.
