Pros

There is honestly no pros

Cons

Nory expects a lot from their staff and it's not worth the pay. You will work over 8 hours a day and only receive a 30 minute break. If you are 5 or less minutes late to work they will expect you to stay an extra 15 minutes after work to make up for that short time. if you are over 5 minutes late they will expect you to stay 30 minutes extra. There will be someone micromanaging you and constantly critiquing you. When they correct you, they speak to you in a condescending matter. They don't consider your previous experiences or credentials, they will place someone with less experience in a higher position because they have a certain appearance. They create these extremely complex projects and expect you to do complete every project with the students. If the student don't finish the project, you are expected to complete it so they can have something to show the parents. Also majority of the projects they assign don't work and you are left figuring out how to fix it. They charge $900 a week for the students to attend the camp and they only give their assistant teachers $700 a week for over 40 hours of work. Its really not worth it, I worked for only 3 weeks and it was the worse experience I've ever had at a workplace.

Pros

No positive feedback can be given about this company.

Cons

The management is horrible and treat employees not as real people. No lunch breaks and left to clean and take care of everything that should be taken care of by management. All the materials are stuffed into bins and teachers are left to sort out everything without getting paid for extra labor everyday. Teachers are also expected to take a bunch of young children outside with no extra supervision. NYC is very dangerous. When you ask to get some breaks throughout the day you get the response: figure it out on your own

Hello! Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we are so sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience. Each campsite is required to make sure every teacher takes a 30-minute lunch break, and all outdoor group(s) have a student:teacher ratio that is well below the guidelines set by DOH as an additional layer of precaution. Classroom organization at the beginning and end of day ensures teachers have their supplies to ensure a smooth camp experience and has always been compensated. For example, this summer, every teacher is receiving additional 2.5 hours paid preparation time each day. We would really appreciate if you would reach out to our Education manager and share your experience to help us make it right. We greatly appreciate your feedback to help us improve our teacher support. Thank you.

Pros

Sometimes we would get pizza on Fridays if we had a good work week. Co-workers are really fun people and made a great team. A good mission with bad execution.

Cons

The work environment tended to resemble a sweatshop. For many reasons, as follows: The quantity vs. hourly payment system. Basically, some of the tasks that are to be completed might be paid hourly or by quantity, all at the CEO's discretion. The CEO advertises this as a benefit of working at NORY, as working by quantity allows you to make more money f you exceed the original goal. However, the set rate rarely reflects the reality of completing a tasks (refills, mess ups, fatigue, anything that keeps you from going as fast as you possibly can for sometimes hours at a time.) Management's unrealistic standard often resulted in going home without even being paid minimum wage. This method also wasted a lot of time as you have to fill out a task sheet for every task you do, bathroom breaks, and basically document every moment of your work day. Then, at the end of the day, Management will look over this task sheet and question every aspect of this. "Why did you take that long? What were you doing around this time? What do you mean by this?" Even though he was present with you in the room throughout the entire work day. Even on a good day, where we would surpass goals exponentially and find ourselves a week ahead of schedule, we were still berated for "not going fast enough." The office. There was no AC in the hot summer months, we were all constantly sweating and taking turns sitting in front of the one (1) fan in the office. Social distancing measures were not enforced at all, there would be 10 individuals working in the small office/workspace at a time. The "workshop" (A table saw and a band saw) were crammed into a small corner in the office, surrounded by plastic sheets with no ventilation. We were expected to use these power tools with no safety training and for a long time, no protective gear like ear covers. Ultimately a very unsafe workspace. NORY prioritizes quantity over quality, often being wasteful of time and resources just to have a faster outcome. There is little to no concern for the needs of employees. I, and several of my co-workers, were fired via email suddenly and without any notice due to being unable to commit to M-F schedule, despite being promised that he would work around my college student schedule in the interview. Being a "Maker" is an unsafe, unfair, and unrewarding position. Find another place to work.

Hello there! Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry about your experience. We agree with your feedback. 2020 summer was the toughest time for our maker team. When the COVID lockdown was lifted in May, 2020, we had to prepare for our summer camp with extremely limited time. The environment was more stressful and tense than we desire. We identified many areas we could improve on, and we are proud to say our team came a long way since then. We can proudly say that the current maker team is full of positive energy and fun and pleasant teamwork. We would welcome you back to see the difference!
