Thank you for your comment and I am sorry that you feel as you do about your management. We do take these matters very seriously so please do flag this with your Director who will certainly investigate any issues. In the meantime we were concerned to see if there was a more general problem and so we have looked at the recent staff survey. Nothing was flagged up which is reassuring. Please do talk to your Director though about your specific concerns.

Pros

Lots of holidays where you don't have to be there.

Cons

I was a ChildLine counsellor and worked at NSPCC for 6 years. The management hierarchy is overbearing and obstructive to doing one's role. No-one is allowed to make decisions so all 'requests' for service improvement or staff management etc go up and up the management structure with nothing ever getting done to change things. If you're at the bottom of that structure you're screwed. This is a supposedly anti-bullying organisation and yet bullying is inherent in the way people are managed and left unsupported and victimised. In an emotional front-line role there was no supervision and no care for staff welfare. Everyone was regularly and repeatedly off sick. Staff turnover was high. Staff are actively told to 'put up and shut up' by management. This is the worst place I have ever worked and I would not go back if you gave me a million quid to do so.

Thanks for taking the time to post and we are really sorry that you clearly feel so negatively about your time at the NSPCC. We have recently been looking at the extent to which we do as you say – ie allow staff to make decisions. There is no doubt that we can do better and our staff survey this year bears this out. So this is real priority for us – thank you for raising it. We always challenge bullying – we have a zero tolerance of it. If we have failed in your case then we are sorry. We certainly do value all of our staff but there is no doubt that working on our helplines can be tough. We do know that we need to work hard at ensuring that our staff feel just how much they are appreciated.

Pros

helping children and the half decent salary

Cons

terrible working hours, the only children not helped by NSPCC/Childline are Childline staff- late nights and weekends (all marked up as late evenings- what? 2am?) Then, now, redundancy in some bases with growth in others, all to make the staff profile fit Workforce Management (computer rostering)

Thank you for your feedback. It is a great shame that you have not had a positive experience of the NSPCC management. There have been a number of challenging decisions to make and the need to move the organisation forward to reach more children, using the benefits that technology can offer. Change in working practices brings challenges and uncertainty and this will inveitably create anxiety. It is of course never an intention to create a difficult working environment for any employee and we will need to improve how we manage change. The NSPCC's one and only goal will always remain protecting children from abuse, however, we clearly have some learning to do not to fall short of good practices when managing staff. Thank you again for your frank feedback.
