Exceptional Working Conditions for Software Engineers

May 27, 2015 - Senior Software Engineer in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland

      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

It is hard to find a working environment in Northern Ireland that is better than NaviNet. Engineers are treated exceptionally well. Teams are well thought out and are well structured (dedicated QA in teams is a stroke of genius). The lean/kanban development approach works well with the products that they build. Senior Management have a good grasp of the technical challenges faced and allow engineers time to build what's right. No blame culture and seldom date-driven. Dedicated DevOps team is a bonus. Pizza Friday every fortnight, or catering any time there's a Town Hall Meeting is enjoyed by everyone. At times of celebration, after new release or as a kind gesture, senior management allow staff to leave early on a Friday.

      Cons

The work is not the most challenging. NaviNet in Belfast has an intense recruitment process which results in very talented engineers being employed to do mediocre work. The laid back management approach can be a turn off for some, as boredom sets in quickly and there's only so much table tennis you can play. Some teams and peer groups are cliquey and there's a perception that internal promotions are based on who their drinking buddies are.

Excellent company, interesting work, good people

      Pros

      * The company is going through an interesting time as it moves from a custom solution to a product-based solution for the domain in which it operates. * The company is well established within the healthcare communications space but given the last point it feels almost like a start-up in someways. A lot of energy and excitement around the office. * The company will be successful with it's move to a product solution - it's just a question of what the degree of success be! * Friendly people who are eager to help their colleagues. I have seen nothing in terms of problematic office politics. * Agile-based approach - everyone is looking to improve on everything they do in an iterative manner.

      Cons

      * There is a lot of information to absorb in a short space of time to try and make an effective contribution. * The lack of established processes mean hiccups will occur along the way but the no-blame culture in place means this doesn't become a huge problem.

      Pros

I have been body shopped for most of my working life and have worked in many companies and working for NaviNet stacks up well against the best of these. The staff are motivated and the management are key to that. Great social events, well organised.

      Cons

Meetings (of which there can be many) can go off on tangents - need to retain focus

      Pretty good place to work

May 1, 2015 -  in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great work environment with supportive team members and management. Considerable amount of time dedicated to research rather than just hammering out code, testing and releasing. Small perks like pizza friday, company sponsored events. You get fed almost once a week on average by the company. 2 company events each year which are a full day off work. Half day Fridays through August.

      Cons

Pension contribution not as good as other companies in Belfast No bonus, but salaries are reasonably good

      Pros

The company offers standard perks like days out, free food, etc. Generally a relaxed workspace, with some flexibility on hours.

      Cons

Some of the work is less challenging than may be expected. There is a lot to learn for new hires.
