Pros

I get to turn my laptop off at 5:30pm and forget the job exists for the evening.

Cons

The company is desperately understaffed as a result of mass redundancies over the course of the past 12-18 months. It is also growing extremely quickly. The result? Departments that are unable to keep their head above water and employees drowning under the workload. This in itself is bad enough but I felt downright insulted by the CEO's recent comments that this was 'tough but a good kind of tough' because we were helping people invest. I ran this through my corporate nonsense translator and instead of 'tough but a good kind of tough because we are helping people invest' I got back 'tough but a good kind of tough because we are making our shareholders happy'. You will have to excuse me if I don't think drowning under my workload and feeling perpetually stressed out during working hours (which is very much a 'past 6-12 months development') is a 'good kind of tough'. When I next speak to my GP I will tell him that I am 'utterly stressed out at work but the good kind of stressed'. You will also have to excuse me for perhaps not thinking that an annual pay raise that barely exceeds inflation is adequate recompense for enduring 'a good kind of tough'. No doubt Nutmeg employees will soon reap the rewards for being true heroes, enduring unmanageable workloads just so we can help people to invest in an identikit ETF product. The rewards will trickle down sometime soon, I'm sure. One thing to bear in mind if you are thinking of joining client services: you are joining a run-of-the-mill call centre at this point where you will be essentially chained to your desk and pressured into wrapping calls up as quickly as possible while also being berated when you don't do enough to follow-up on issues raised. Truly Schrödinger's call centre.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to leave a review of Nutmeg. We appreciate all feedback we receive. We’re sorry to hear your views about the last 12 – 18 months. From an employer perspective we actively encourage people not to work long hours and encourage our team to take frequent breaks throughout the day. This is reiterated by management, including our CEO at the all hands company meeting which takes place every Friday. I also wanted to address the specific CEO comments you mentioned. Neil wanted to praise everyone’s hard work and furthermore to stress that he understands that certain business areas are feeling the pressure due to significant growth. We are rectifying this by hiring additional staff for the client services division as well as providing support where we can from across the business. Due to the nature of the current pandemic, it was difficult to foresee the massive growth that Nutmeg is going through. If you wish to discuss anything further, please do reach out to the People and Talent Team. It would be good to speak to you in detail to resolve any further concerns you have moving forward.

They let themselves down

Pros

Started off promising- I loved the company and everyone seemed really friendly. There are so many genuinely lovely people in the team, it’s a shame company culture/management let it down. They do some things well; I like the weekly company wide meetings, they’re good for (what’s left of the) company culture. Good experience/stepping stone if you’re trying to get into fintech etc, and good work life balance

Cons

Outside of the company wide meetings, there is no feel of company culture at all. All departments feel very separate, there’s not a culture of support and collaboration. CS felt like a toxic environment, very micromanaged, over-monitored and few opportunities for professional development. They have very high staff turnover in CS and I think maybe they should have a sit down and think about why because it’s clear they’re doing something that’s losing them good staff. Training was poor when we were brought on, they throw you in at the deep end and leave you to fend for yourself because there’s little support from management. Other notable cons: -poor communication between teams, which makes it hard to do your job well in CS -overemphasis on (unclear) metrics when monitoring employees, you’ll get told off for “underperforming” with no clear idea what you’re doing wrong -high pressure, high stress for what is essentially sun-market pay -work is not fairly divided between CS agents, some end up doing far more than others with no recognition -no obvious opportunities for progression/growth -over-monitoring of CS agents leads to lack of agency/feelings of mistrust -when I was there management made 6 people cry in as many months, there is no excuse for that At it’s best it was great, at its worst I was too afraid to grab a coffee and go to the toilet for fear of being told off

Thanks for taking the time to write the review and to provide your feedback. We’re glad to hear there were a number of things you feel positively about during your time with Nutmeg. We note your feedback on management, however this is different to the feedback we received through the company engagement survey, which we can also view at a functional level for Marketing and as such will discuss this with the Marketing Director. Please feel free to reach out to our People Director, Mel Wright, if you wish to discuss anything further or have some examples you could share with us.
