Pros

The view is nice.

Cons

Nightmare situation. Long hours, bad weather, and small paychecks are not my complaint, as these are part of (even the point of?) any outdoor education post. The problem with Pali is that it's dismal pay for a largely unsupported employee experience. Management is money-minded, stuck in their ways, and apathetic to suggestions for improvement. Cliquishness among returning staff is rampant, ignored by leadership, and happens because it's such a hard-scrabble environment. While some of the seasonal staff are going to be good, motivated educators and passionate outdoor people, their talents and natural instincts are the only thing protecting students from accidents and harm. General safety policy is misguided or missing to the point of being dangerous to students, who are not prepared for Pali when they arrive, and are told to get through uncomfortable situations rather than dialing back for safety. Facilities are understocked, rickety, and in some cases literally falling apart. The main goal of the owner is to maximize profit, not to provide education. I witnessed or was the focus of several racist and sexist comments/jokes. Turnover is big every season because once you get there and see how it's run, you can't get out fast enough.

Pros

You meet some amazing people and (being from the East Coast) it's an excellent opportunity to explore California and the West Coast. You get housing (in shared rooms but still) and meals, plus you have an outdoor job. If you're good at saving money, you don't technically have to pay rent or much on food so your cost of living is low. The pros pretty much stop there, except that in every other job I have now if I am having a difficult time I think "well at least I am no longer at Pali" and my current job seems a lot better.

Cons

You will never truly appreciate time-off until you have worked 23 hours of the day-which is the norm for Pali. Instructors get 1.5 hours off per day (sometimes less, we had some zip line time that ran late) and there are some weekends that need workers and you get guilt-tripped into working them. 75% in-cabin does not sound like a lot until you are in a situation where you begin to dread the start of work. It's simply too exhausting. Everyone burns out. Everyone. Burns. Out. The negative energy seeps through the staff so even if you have a better positive attitude than most, your time will come. How could it not, if you have so little time to recuperate? The staff gets sick all at once and you need to keep working. The admin can be good, but eventually you realize that those who make it past 2 seasons are essentially the ones to move up-so it's not really on skills and suitability and more like timing for how long you last. It's difficult to not leave this place with some bitterness. I came in with a positive attitude and I am glad to have done it but I will never go back again. Also, there are mountain lions. It was a deterrent to trying to go for runs!

Pros

Free housing & food, friendships, nice location

Cons

working literally 22.5 hours a day, discriminatory policies around gender identity and expression, pay far below minimum wage, little support throughout the day unless you are having a full on breakdown, no work/life balance during the week.
