Pros

The clients; while many were challenging, to put it mildly, there were some truly outstanding clients who truly sought to improve their writing through repeated business, often conducting interesting work or research, and sincerely appreciated editors' efforts and willingness to offer suggestions for improvement. The staff; truly, the team of editors is comprised of some remarkably brilliant and accomplished individuals from myriad professional and academic backgrounds. That they all ended up at Papercheck was and remains a mystery to me.

Cons

Missing the opportunity to continue engaging with some of my favorite clients is, without exaggeration, my sole regret upon leaving this company. To say that our management was unresponsive would be a tremendous understatement. Simple requests (and new ideas to improve both customer service and back-end workflow) went unanswered for months and, at times, seemed entirely discouraged. The working environment, particularly during the busy seasons (midterms and final exam periods, especially) was socially and mentally crippling -- the workload was simply inconsistent with the staffing structure day to day in the office. Combine these issues with perennial construction in the building (which makes it hard to concentrate on detailed editing), along with a company culture that demands silence in a room full of people, and you have a working hellscape.

Pros

Employees who are desperate during this economy and have never worked elsewhere may find this company bearable.

Cons

I have been an editor for over 20 years. In my opinion, Papercheck had the most dishonest, disorganized, and disrespectful work environment I have ever encountered. When I applied and took an editing test, I was told that Editorlive.com was a third-party company to handle applicant testing. When doing research to prepare for my interview, I wondered whether or not Papercheck.com, Proof-reading.com, and Editorlive.com were all owned and operated by the same person, and whether or not Papercheck.com and Proof-reading.com use the same editors. I wish I had known the answer prior to being hired. The following are conditions I and coworkers witnessed as of March 2014: -24-hour editing service, but not enough seating, inadequate bathroom access, inadequate heating, and poor lighting—causing eye strain, headaches, and increasing the potential for editing errors to client papers. -High-crime neighborhood: sirens, gunshots, smell of marijuana, and people sleeping (or screaming) on the sidewalks outside were very distracting. -Editing services were provided day and night, year round. For employees, this often meant working holidays, which was not disclosed during the interview process. I have spoken to 5 former coworkers who were all laid off, quit, or otherwise left within the past 3 months. (Note that the only positive review thus far does not address the issue of the three websites. If the web developer does not work on all three sites, that would be useful to know. Papercheck appears to be a wonderful employer for web developers in Boston, but the office and editors I describe are in SF.)

Pros

The editing part of the job was interesting, but not much beyond that.

Cons

I had to be on call most of every weekend, and the deadlines were usually demanding. Often I'd get little work and come away with just several dollars. At times I'd earn nothing. Overall I'd say it was a waste of my time.
