      No customers = Firing all but two project manager

      Pros

      When I was at a client, the work was interesting and challenging. I was able to make my own schedule based on client needs and had some control over the hours I worked. I really enjoyed the client interaction.

      Cons

      I was told I would have a position with the company as long as I did great work. My reviews were always great from the CEO and VP of Delivery, I was promised a bonus, and instead of getting the raise and bonus promised, I , along with 3 other PMs (over 1/2 the work force) was fired. We were let go based on the company not having any new customers or expansion of existing customers. I felt disposable. There has been over 250% turnover since I started and that was less than 2 years ago.

One of the ways that we retain high performing resources is to maintain a bench policy at full pay. In turn, we ask for productivity and contribution to the business as a whole. Employment separation is never an easy event, and we make every effort to secure engagements for any employee on the bench. However, like any organization, if we are not able to leverage those opportunities in a timely manner, occasionally we have to make tough decisions.       Did not receive promised year-end bonus

      Pros

      Since services offered are commodity (no matter how you spin it, there is no intellectual capital in IT PM), work itself is stress-free with flexible hours.

      Cons

      I gave management plenty of notice and stayed on until the project came to a conclusion. In return they offered year-end bonus especially since my last day was in December. My fault for not getting this in writing.

      Fired just before sales commissions are due

      Pros

      If you are a leader who takes charge, this is a great place to hone your craft since the company is devoid of any processes or standard procedures.

      Cons

      It's all about profit and loss statement. What have you done for me lately? In the final stages of closing, management stepped in to take sales credit. There's a reason why the company replaces its sales lead every year.
