No vision, No development

Pros

Fun projects, nice people, startup environment. You get involved in variety of projects even they are not your expertise so you have opportunities to learn lot. The office is cool at a nice location. Relatively flexible working hours. Also due to startup environment, you get closed to the leadership team and how they make decisions and more interactions as well.

Cons

1. Overload is common. When projects are stacked, the resource allocation is poor. They don’t look at if you are interested, or if this is your career goal or development, simply assigning to you because they think you have time. 2. No career growth nor development. Because they are startup environment (though the company has been there for a while) and also because they are still seeking new customers, the team is small and in order to maintain enough cash flow, they cannot hire many people, so you will end up being assigned to different projects regardless your role and no room for career growth; 3. Leadership lack of long term vision. They seem only worry on how to keep the business, but not necessarily what they really want to do in long term. And the business model could make it hard to realize the value add to the customers, even though they are trying to do the right thing for their people. 4. Not a place for mid-senior level. The decision is still at the C level given it is small company and all the interactions with the customers will need to involve them to mak decisions. There is little room for mistakes or feedback as again winning business is not easy and also consulting firms generally speaking seems less tolerant for mistakes.

Pros

- Company's management style is hands-off and minimal (manager's are expected to review work and not coach) - You can sometimes pursue outside interests as you have ample free time between and during client projects (except during busy periods) - In-person attendance is requested but not enforced or maintained (SF office) - Co-founders are silly!

Cons

- Classic example of an executive team that doesn't walk the walk. Lots of promises and surface-level collaboration with little to no follow-through. - Very fluid company vision and direction (changes with every new proposal) - Work environment (virtual and in-person) is dull. Could stem from founders expressing that building culture isn't much of a priority for them. "Culture creates itself" - Oddly unprofessional at times. For example, founders will mimic foreign accents of clients and investors during all-hands meetings.

Interesting work & great impact w/ some growing pains

Pros

Pilot44 gives you the opportunity to work on a wide range of interesting, engaging, and challenging projects for some of the largest consumer goods and healthcare companies in the world. You will never be bored. Depending on what team you're working on, you get to tackle a new business challenge every 2 to 6 weeks, building on existing expertise or branching into new and exciting topics. Focus areas cover everything from sustainability to advertising tech to supply chain optimization and more. The people you get to work with are great across the board. Spending time with smart, driven, personable coworkers makes even difficult work fun to tackle. The company is in the process of developing its approaches to things like employee education and career tracks, so there is an opportunity for input on the benefits and progression opportunities you would like to see adopted. The office is also located in the Presidio, with healthy lunch options and rotating food trucks right next door, beautiful nature walks for walk-and-talk meetings, and views of the Golden Gate Bridge. It can be a bit of a trek to get there but the location is breathtaking. Despite some growing pains, I deeply enjoyed my time at Pilot44 and think very highly of the team and the work they continue to do there.

Cons

As the company has grown rapidly, there have been (sometimes extreme) problems with capacity projections for employees. Consulting always entails some amount of flexibility, with clients in different time zones and occasional last-minute requests, but there were some extended periods of widespread burnout and rapid turnover during my time. Pilot44 has recently adopted smart time tracking tools that monitor your computer use and let you quickly and easily sort your tabs, emails, and applications into their respective client projects, which gives me a lot of hope for future capacity planning, however. As the company continues to navigate these growing pains, it's important to raise flags up the chain of command when you're feeling overworked or burnt out. Bonus points if you can push for honest company-wide discussions and solution-focused brainstorming if you notice widespread problems at the company, around capacity planning or anything else.
