Pros

This is the first tech company I've worked for that pays more than lip service to the concept of work-life balance. At most places, it means that your life and work become one (in favor of work). At Reaktor, 40 hour work weeks are enforced since they're equally beneficial to its employees and clients. In addition, the company pays for daily subway transportation, takes everyone on bi-annual company trips (one international), provides an epic amount of leave for new parents, provides dinner every Thursday, and just generally gives a damn about all aspects of its employee's lives and well-being. Work at Reaktor is challenging because you will most certainly need to step outside of your defined role to be successful. Teams are colocated with clients and are responsible for day-to-day communication and client relations. This responsibility brings with it a level of autonomy and freedom that is rare. Reaktor trusts its teams to make the best decisions possible at any moment. If the team makes the wrong decision, we learn from it and move on. Work at Reaktor is exciting because the situations we are called in to tackle are usually big sticky problems with no easy answer. Like most design problems, they are hard to pin down until you start attempting to solve them We take a build-first approach and learn by making. No 6-month design exploration projects here. The things you imagine get built fast and improved even faster. This is also the first tech company I've worked at that genuinely feels like a family. I've only been here for 1.5 years, but I feel as though it's been 10. The company, and everyone in it, work hard every day to keep improving relationships and each other.

Cons

The work can be daunting if you prefer to focus on your defined role. Reaktor teams don't typically include project managers or people managing client relations. Those responsibilities are shouldered equally by the team. It can also be a tough place if you aren't accustomed to driving your own development or making decisions on your own. Reaktor employees are generally expected to steer that ship individually.

Pros

I've worked at Reaktor (NYC) for just over a month - so I've been around long enough to sweat the Kool-aid out of my system, but not long enough for a sense of deep loyalty to set in. Here is the straight and skinny about this place. First, Reaktor is a deeply Finnish company in many ways and is why I chose to come here. WTF does that mean? 1. Small Talk - I found this wildly refreshing from the typical company experience of a lot of pontification over execution. The Finn's are comfortable with silence. At first, it's uncomfortable, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate the respect for the need to focus. Moreso, I respect the direct conversations that don't come infused with personal or emotional undertones. People here mean what they say and say what they mean. 2. World Class - The talent here is world class sans the ego. Everyone is either senior or a remarkably adaptive learner. At first I was intimidated by the talent around me, but that quickly faded due to the lack of ego and hierarchy. There is no one here trying to use anyone else to climb professionally or politically, it's just not a part of the culture. The result is a culture that promotes authenticity, collaboration, and support. 3. Autonomy - Okay, you'll see this repeatedly come up in other reviews. And like most american's I looked at their company values and About Page and was like "wow, cool concept, but not practical". Like I said, I am a month into it here at Reaktor, and this another core value of the company is real. I have been waiting every day for someone to come up behind me and in a Dr. Evil voice say "Ha. Ha. Ha. We have you now, that was all a lie. Here are the unspoken rules of Reaktor." So what does Autonomy look like? It means that if you work here, there is a simple principle in which everything is predicated on - "We trust you." From your expense report, to your working hours, to your choice of tech, to how you manage your project / client, to emptying the coffee grounds after you make your afternoon espresso. 4. Work-life Balance - when I interviewed here, I picked up on a repeated emphasis on the people and their wellness. This European ideal in the US, especially in NYC, sounds mythical, like taming a liger. I fully expected 60+hr work weeks, weekends, and late nights. So this is where stuff gets freaky...the expectations here are defined by you and your team. And your personal time is protected not just by you, but by others. You don't get messages / emails / texts / slacks / etc late at night or on the weekends. Honestly, its uncomfortable at first. Eventually, you start to grasp this concept of having time to do things for yourself and/or your family/friend.

Cons

Not for everyone - this level of freedom, ownership, and trust is not for everyone. I have experienced personally and watched others struggle with the absence of imposed structure. Ironically, its something that most people believe they want, but when they finally have it they aren't sure what to do with it. If you decide it is for you, find a way to keep your mind open and retrain your expectations.

Pros

You get to work with a lot of really smart and nice people, who take care of each other. If you’re good at playing people games, you can basically do anything you like that has the slightest of business sense. Nice balance between work and rest of life.

Cons

The top management is lost and the company doesn’t have a vision or direction. There’s a lot of ambitious high level talk but the action is more or less body shopping. There’s a lot of hubris around Reaktor being unique or the best of its class. This is not true; they’re basically building web forms for corporate clients. Regardless, this is reflected in somewhat low compensation levels, which means you get only a fraction of your billing as salary while the importance of immaterial benefits and the community is grossly overvalued in salary negotiations.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write feedback and voice your concerns about the company’s direction. I’m glad to hear that you have enjoyed the community and people at Reaktor – they form the core of everything we do. A healthy work-life balance is also something we try our best to foster. As an ambitious and autonomous company, we’ve definitely had our fair share of growing pains. Therefore, I totally see where you’re coming from with your critique of the unclear vision. Our newly defined strategy aims to help with just that: we are currently (and continuously) building processes to bring structure and direction to our work as a rapidly growing, global company without losing our entrepreneurial culture. About compensation: we put a lot of effort into ensuring that our salaries and other benefits are competitive and equitable. Reaktor Finland did a thorough salary analysis just recently and we are constantly fine-tuning our compensation to suit the market and people’s needs. In addition to the community and other benefits, such as extensive healthcare, child care, and hobbies, we also issue shares to all our employees. If you have any more feedback or insights about the way you’d like to see Reaktor led, don’t hesitate to send me a message – anonymously or otherwise! It would be nice to hear more about your experience. Thanks again. Have a lovely autumn, Aini, Talent Growth Lead
