Pros

It was fun to start working on a new project as a start-up but then you realize you have to work things, not in your contract, and going the extra mile is not acknowledge

Cons

Very bad communication: one day they tell you a certain task, then the rules behind the task change the next week. I was also treated horribly by management, the owner did nothing, decided to quit and the owner decided that my vacations were not to be paid, which is illegal in my country, I was also treated as a full-time employee when in my contract it was only for services.

Hi Diego, it’s Alex, CEO of Right Balance here. While I can understand where you're coming from, let me explain a few things so the picture becomes more clear. In the startup, everyone wears multiple hats, including me. Things change rapidly and we expect individuals to adapt, own, and continuously improve as conditions and circumstances require. This has been clearly communicated to you by your direct manager and by me personally. After a few months of doing a great job, we started seeing your performance decreasing starting from around April 2022. Coincidentally, that’s where your second job started, one that we were not aware of at that time. After giving you a lot of regular feedback to increase your performance, it declined further and your attitude also began to deteriorate. We started a performance improvement plan for you to recover your performance, and you instead decided to quit. Regarding your vacation time, our policy is use it or lose it. You've taken some vacations and the ones you were planning to take in the future are lost as not used. Since the beginning, it was always a contract relationship with you. If you would've preferred to be hired as a full time employee, it's something that you should've mentioned during the offer negotiation as we have both options available. Thank you for your advice regarding correcting toxic behaviors. I observed that despite your decreased performance and delivering the same feedback multiple times with you resisting it, sometimes the feedback was delivered in a harsh way. We’ll own it and improve it. Ultimately, I don’t feel it was the right cultural fit between your expectations and the current startup culture we have with the need to wear multiple hats. That said, we wish you all the best at your next job where it’ll hopefully be a better fit for you.
