I worked at Royal Air Force full-time

    Pros

Spent 6 years in the RAF - Helped me grow up and kick on in the commercial world with a great grounding in IT.

    Cons

Moving around a lot, no real control over career path - All stuff you know when you sign on the line, but everyone has their point where it's time for something new.

    Advice to Management

Modernise a little, the military, as with wider society, is evolving - you'll attract a better talent pool but looking forward rather than holding onto the past.

I have been working at Royal Air Force full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Travel, large number of locations to work from, excellent standard of training, job security

    Cons

Quality of recognised qualifications are low compared to civilian equivalent. No extra pay for shift work. Promotion progression is slow in Aircraft engineering ground trades. Job doesn't suit family life.

I have been working at Royal Air Force full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

People - Some will be friends for life.
    Adventurous Training opportunities
Schemes that contribute towards further education courses.

    Cons

    - Awful , unhealthy, poorly cooked food in the mess since pay as you dine was introduced. Most now eat out 3 or 4 times a week at fast food restaurants as food is of better standard and cheaper.
    - Accommodation is poor. We had no hot water (or heating) all of last winter in our SLA accommodation housing 30 people and were given the option of using the gym to wash. We have 2 working showers currently, for the same amount of people.
    - Very slow promotion, 8 years on average for engineering trade.
    - No real life balance making it very hard to plan around work.
    - No incentive to stay without ridiculous return of service lengths.
    - General low morale.
    - Poor management

    Advice to Management

RAF personnel are sick and tired of the politics that seem to be entering the armed forces policies regarding D&I which is pushed far too hard. When I aired this with the CAS and CASWO they were also of the opinion that it is being pushed too hard but it's MOD policy and has to be pushed. Personnel are increasingly becoming frustrated with being 'trained how to think'. The quality of mess food and accommodation should be looked at as a matter of urgency. The people is what I enjoy the most, but treatment of staff is somewhat appalling.

I have been working at Royal Air Force full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Travel and great people. Motivated people willing to risk their lives for the country. It's an honour to serve with them.

    Cons

Immoral politicians who can only take from their people. My pension has been reduced twice, my salary has stagnated and promotion has become harder.

    Advice to Management

Show some backbone and stand up to politicians.
