Bad for researchers

Pros

Flexible schedule and company benefits (botanic Garden pass, gym, free Friday lunches) Some good researchers and engineers. Comfortable location of the office (close to the station)

Cons

1) Hostile attitude from some managers (including shouting and cursing). 2) Company has started as heavily research oriented. With time passed it has become more customer oriented, and fields this company decided to go leave quite small opportunity for good publications. 3) Has a lot of bottlenecks in terms of operating procedures. Everything should be be approved and confirmed and usually by the same person...

Pros

Used to have a good atmosphere

Cons

There are lots of cons to this company that I have experienced: 1. In my opinion, management had a hard time deciding what to go for. It is really not clear what they want to do or what the company needs to do. 2. In my opinion, the atmosphere got aggressive at times. 3. From my point of view, I found a big gap between research to business. It always felt researchers are treated at a higher level, though engineers have been doing a lot of the work. 4. Salaries were not on par with competing businesses.

Pros

• Some fantastic employees. • Opportunities to learn about SotA probabilistic modelling/Bayesian optimisation approaches

Cons

• Management seem to keep making the same mistakes, ignoring feedback from employees, and then when things fail they will say that the problems were unforeseeable. • There's been two sets of redundancies in a 7 month period. During this, management has tended to be unaffected, or have received title bumps. • Low morale had led to a major brain drain of the best talent at the company. The company is around half the size that it was a year prior, and continues to shrink. • Constant restructures, imposed top-down. • Little avenue for growth. While this isn't unusual for small companies, Secondmind had used "number of promotions" as a metric when deciding who to make redundant, ignoring the fact that it's easy to get in a position where you cannot be promoted unless your boss quits.
