I have been working at Skyscanner full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

    - A lot of really smart engineers work here - Fantastic culture supportive of learning from failures and asking direct questions of leadership - Supportive of work/life balance - Competitive pay and benefits - Internal/employee tooling and support is treated the same as our customers, making me feel very valued

    Cons

    - Frequent strategy changes are disruptive to day-to-day-work - Career progression, especially progress beyond a senior engineer, is not very transparent

    Advice to Management

    More transparency, less diruption

I have been working at Skyscanner full-time

    Pros

    - Flight search is a good product and well recognised everywhere - Some very good people who is a pleasure to work with - Nice benefits and flexibility to wfh - Nice office and very well located

    Cons

    - In the past year the focus changed from doing what’s right for the customer into doing what makes more money. There’s a huge push to get more users into the Hotels product but no investment into actually making it a product people want to use. - Senior management is very distanced from the rest of the company. Some VPs appear to be completely out of their depth and not adding any value. - Very political organisation...

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at the what the company looks like today and what values do we actually prioritise. Stop trying to find creative ways to justify why everything we do is traveler first and partner second and actually go back to living by those values. We have a large audience and a some really great initiatives but we won’t get anywhere by trying to squeeze every cent from poorly executed products like our hotels vertical.

    Pros

Excellent company to work at. Quality of work depends on the team of-course. I am lucky to be in of the best teams. Lots of learning and impactful work.

    Cons

None that I can think of right now

I worked at Skyscanner full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

    - An opportunity to create products with meaning and to impact 'real people'. - Nice offices, but not on par with Facebook/Google - corporate wrapped up in colorful floors. - Huge mobile focus, ability to work on cutting edge tech.

    Cons

    - The only constant is change. You need to be resilient and willing to move with the times, be it the 6month strategy or the monthly re-focus. Hold on to why they hired you. You be you, let them be them. - Embrace a crazy schedule. Be prepared to meet to prepare for the meeting. And to do it in person. If you are not based in London, be ready to visit. A lot. - If you're based in London, don't get caught up in the "could...

I have been working at Skyscanner full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Salary and Bonus. There also is an opportunity to buy shares in the company.

    Cons

Many senior managers especially in the so called growth tribe pride themselves being challengers or disrupters. As challengers they are utterly useless as they have no clue on the substance they're challenging on. They often lack basic understanding of individual markets (eg, they only know Spain from their beach holidays but consider themselves well placed to challenge the native's growth strategy) and they haven't used...

    Advice to Management

Look at all the evidence against 360 degree feedback. Stop constantly strategising. Get rid of the bullies in senior management. The atmosphere is sick and broken. In Edinburgh, this used to be a company you could be proud of.

I have been working at Skyscanner full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Great Work from Home Opportunities Nice Colleagues Flexible working

    Cons

Ever since the Ctrip acquisition and the new CEO, the company feels like an episode straight from Silicon Valley circa when Jack Barker takes over Pied Piper and makes them pivot to build "boxes". They are filling leadership spots with ex-Microsoft, Amazon, and Netflix Execs with no travel or e-commerce experience-- quintessential salesmen without product vision. Other Cons include: * Frequent Restructuring- your...

    Advice to Management

No one cares about your values if you don't invest in your ppl. Stop forcing the company sauce down our throats. Saying that you're "Agile" and "Lean" is not an excuse to cancel projects that only have been worked out for a month but require 3 months of documentation to build out. Get some people of color into the office...It's starting to look like the "Children of the Corn" movie in the Edinburgh office.

I have been working at Skyscanner full-time

    Pros

I have never worked with such a big group of amazingly friendly people. I genuinely haven't met a single person who isn't nice, friendly, helpful and willing to listen.

    Cons

Widely distributed teams across three timezones makes some communication and working difficult. While this may seem to be a good basis for remote working, it hasn't worked out so well for me. No perks related to working for a travel company.

    Advice to Management

More upfront honesty about expectations of job roles before making an offer, and the likelihood of remote working.

I have been working at Skyscanner full-time

    Pros

Great squad mates, good compensation and benefit packages and perks and at time fun and exciting challenges to work on.

    Cons

An executive team which can seem out of touch with both the teams they manage and the needs of the average traveller. Some seem out of their depth in handling questions internally and I don’t feel genuinely listened to. Often feel as though we have lost sight of what travellers really want in how we prioritise what we build. Culturally we aren’t the same company we were when I joined a few years ago. I worked at Skyscanner

    Pros

Interesting problems, freedom to decide on your stack, flexible working.

    Cons

Poor diversity, with very few women engineers at the most senior levels of the company. There is, unless it has drastically changed, more than one tribe without a single woman squad lead. They appear to be neither hired directly nor given proper opportunities to progress. There is also no anonymous way to report harassment at the company, which a former colleague confided was a problem she faced.

    Advice to Management

Break up the boys' club in tribe engineering leadership. There are several talented women engineers frustrated at their lack of progression who have left for greater recognition and opportunities elsewhere.
