Pros

Extremely cool products you won't find anywhere else in Chicago, if you close sometimes you'll find free food in the break room that didn't sell that day, great coworkers, bright spacious building

Cons

There's probably not a business anywhere that's managed worse than Standard Market. There are barely any department or store level managers left as the partners didn't want to pay them anymore, so they were fired or demoted or are overworked and basically useless. Nothing gets done or changes (including employee reviews or raises or promotions, despite what they tell you to your face) and no one really cares what you have to say, regardless of how much you know and can do or how much business you bring in. Employees are not valued AT ALL, and management is having an awful time hiring people (unfortunate for the workers, who work the equivalent of 3 peoples' jobs but get paid for 1, and the Market is always always always understaffed). Most knowledgeable good people either leave or get fired for little reason, and with morale so low and staff taken so advantage of, it's not surprising that sales have plummeted this year and they even sold their warehouse. I don't see a bright or thriving future, which is sad, because it's such an amazingly cool place. Shop there while you can, just don't work there!

Pros

The company from the outside looks great. As you walk in, the store is beautiful and appears to be clean and well taken care of. But behind the scenes is a way different reality.

Cons

Salary employees are expected to work Unreasonable hours 50+ often without a day off, and be on call 24/7. Hourly employees are not allowed any overtime but are constantly working very short handed due to high turnover in employees. There is no training in place for new roles. Department managers do not do any on boarding with their new employees such as tours, meet and greet, payroll software training or log ins, expectations of the job, often employees start working without being set up on the time clock therefore left to chase down management when they don’t get paid for hours worked. No harassment training in place at all. Upper management is allowed to mentally bully employees. No employee incentives... no Christmas parties, reviews are not done on an ongoing yearly basis. Often there are no raises offered at a year anniversary, unless employee takes on an additional role or responsibility, no matter how good the employee is. No one keeps track to ensure 6 month or yearly reviews are done on time as stated in employee handbook. Employee handbook is a joke. It’s out dated and no one follows the policies. I was verbally told I had to have complete open availability by the store director to hold a salaried position however other salaried employees are treated differently not being required to have the same open availability and are NEVER scheduled for a closing shift.

Pros

Decent hourly pay but not much else

Cons

Bad Managers and owners who make poor decisions. Hourly employees are treated poorly and looked down upon. Insane turn around...10 or more employees are hired and fired PER MONTH
