Pros

Reasonable hours and work/life balance, decently stocked kitchen, some cool people here and there... that's about it.

Cons

I have never worked at a place that made me dread actually waking up in the morning and coming to work quite like Starry. Before I started, I saw all these 5-star Glassdoor reviews and was incredibly excited to work there. But like any deal that sounds like it's too good to be true... it was. The level of micromanagement I experienced was unlike anything I could've ever imagined existed. I had to take days off at a time because of the anxiety attacks I got from working at this company and the people who flat-out refused to let me do the very job I was hired to do. Working at a place where you know you'll be stroking your colleagues' bruised egos while having them yell at you because they think they manage you... yeah, that'll do that to a person. And it all starts very close to the top—not necessarily the CEO, who from my understanding is a genuinely good guy, but from certain people around him, who have zero idea how to do what their job requires of them in 2019. And that extreme level of disorganization trickles down, leading to confusion, resentment and disdain amongst some staff—especially when some certain spineless members of management refuse to fight for their employees, choosing to instead to throw them under the bus to cover their own you-know-what.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. It seems you didn't get the kind of work experience that we pride ourselves on giving to our employees. Some of the feedback you've left is concerning and I would really like to be able to find out some additional details so that we can work on this. If you're comfortable speaking with me, please send me an email and we can find a mutually agreeable time to talk. I will keep our conversation confidential. - Brandy

Pros

At one point in time from 2018 to early 2020, Starry had an incredibly talented and intelligent group of people working together, with infectious synergy flowing throughout the office. Unfortunately, any of those good hearted, innovative and caring people have left for better opportunities. New management came in late 2020 and completely upheaved anything that was good- this includes HR ("PEOPLE") leadership at the very top, and field marketing. The mass exodus ensued.

Cons

There is not enough energy in my fingers, oxygen in my lungs, or thoughts in my brain to paint a complete picture of what Starry has become, and what they have done to the good people working at the company. As aforementioned- the good people are gone- they have found better opportunities, and something else to do with themselves- where real impact can be made- and not impeded by those at the very top. To put it simply, nepotism allowed bad people to be hired into positions they are clearly not fit, competent, or meant to be in (field marketing), and a massive lack of leadership in HR has created an infectiously toxic environment that is dangerous to the mental health of anyone who desire to lead a happy life. HR does not listen to genuine, real concerns regarding health and safety, or constructive feedback regarding management. Individuals being asked to put themselves into dangerous neighborhoods, a lack of care for a world pandemic, and a condescending and belittling undercurrent dominates the company. You should not be asked to endanger yourself, your family, or other people in a company to do a job. Starry is struggling to grow- both financially and literally in terms of headcount. What they tell their investors, and what they tell their employees is two different stories about what is happening at Starry. This has created pressure at the C-suite that is handed down in the form of verbal lashing, ridiculous requests, and fear of loss of job for those pushing the "MISSION" to the masses. Field marketing teams are essentially door to door sales reps selling internet to residents where service is available. The people who put their souls and soles on the pavement and treated like absolute garbage- not recognized for their hardwork, underpaid, and completely forgotten about by upper management. Management level marketing staff have their hands completely tied by those above. There is no room for growth in a career, when the company - quite literally- cannot scale and meet what they have told their investors. Do yourself a favor- take the interview for your own personal growth, and never take a job here. If you love yourself, your family, and your life- look elsewhere. Starry - is - not- it.

I am really sorry that this was your experience. I think you probably know me. I've been with Starry for six years and I'm now the new Head of People. I'm working to make sure that the "infectious synergy" you mention keeps flowing throughout all of Starry. Please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn if you want to discuss your experience any further. I'd love to connect! - Jeremy

Pros

Free health insurance, generous benefits, cool office space and the IT team is amazing

Cons

Major disorganization which is typical for a startup. Policies can change at the drop of a hat and a lot of managers seem to think they are better than you (stay humble people). Lots of shady activity by HR, I was told “we fire as fast as we hire” which was seemingly a threat so I left

We're sorry to hear that our dynamic environment wasn't a fit for you. The hyper-growth phase we're in isn't for everyone. Best of luck to you in your next adventure!
