Pros

Was able to choose own hours then fill a rota in

Cons

This company carried out a mass firing. They then told everyone remaining that their jobs were safe. A week before my contract was going to end, I was told it would get renewed. On the day of expiration they tell me by email this is no longer true. Payments are delayed every single month and this was since the start. Managers cause continuous distress to employees. They pay minimum wage for extremely skilled jobs then just fire you after they use you. HR team never reply to you and they silence people that speak out.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. We regret to read, that you were not satisfied with us as an employer since we are working continuously on creating a great work environment at StudySmarter. We understand that you were affected by our lay offs and are very sorry that we had to make this hard decision. This is never an easy situation. Unfortunately, such measures were necessary to survive as a Startup during the economic crisis we are facing. We also understand that fair payment is essential for a good workplace. This is why we constantly look externally to ensure that our salaries are in line with the market. Furthermore we regularly review our internal pay scale to ensure that pay decisions are fair and consistent at all times. Pros

- Amazing team mates (from engineers to designers, researchers, data analysts and product managers)

Cons

- No career growth: No prospect on what the career progression should look like. - No diversity: Be prepared to join a team with mostly only men and white people. Diversity is definitely not a priority for the company, it's not even on their radar as a core value. - No long term vision: C-level talks about growth, but they have no vision on what the product could be in 5 years. Also they spend a ridiculous amount of money on offices which are almost empty every day! - Layoffs: Due to the above, they are struggling to grow, investors are pulling out and they are laying off a lot of people - Unlawful: Highly questionable decisions here that are prone to employees filing a lawsuit. They lay off people and then hire people for the same positions without even checking if the people they are laying off have the skills to remain in the company. Moreover, they tried to get away with laying off an employee with only 1 month notice, instead of 3 as per contract!! - Toxic culture: C-level bluntly states that if people are not happy in the company then they should leave, instead of trying to understand what is wrong and make things better for employees wanting to stay. - HR is a nightmare: Mainly for people outside of Germany, they have no idea how to give you access to your benefits like e.g. Private Pension (UK). - Issues with transparency: It's either a political game where things are said to look good and pretty, with no transparency - OR - it's too transparent at times! They share people with faces and current job titles who are being recruited for open positions... which is confidential information!!

Pros

Flexible work hours, some very hardworking and pleasant SEO team members and Subject managers

Cons

This job is highly stressful and poorly paid (£11/hr) for the amount of work expected from employees. You will be expected to churn out well-researched study guide articles for high school students at break-neck speed. This isn't to mention that the content we produce is the backbone of the company, for which we get no writer's byline or royalties. Despite this, the upper-management treat the content writers with disregard on good days and contempt on the bad. Communication and management seem to be their worst qualities. I've personally experienced managers urgently messaging me on weekends to do work and also not responding to my messages/emails for a whole month. The upper-management is condescending and absent-minded. Staff receive little to no training beyond wiki-how style info guides during induction week, despite the nature of the work being highly specialized. They don't offer even marginal pay rises and often pay salaries late. Too much of my time was spent chasing after my salary to avoid being in rent arrears. This company used to be a fresh start-up yet, in the years it's been active, hasn't outgrown its teething stage. They completely lack business direction, asking content creators to work on a new content direction every couple of months. Writers often have to redo their study guide articles only to find out that they need to be changed again, sometimes backtracking to their original form. In some cases, these new content directions were not communicated to us untill months after the decision was made. The higher ups have finally decided to take on an SEO only focus, completely ignoring whether or not their content will actually help students (their target audience). This means they've now slashed a huge proportion of the company despite promising job security, as their employees are expendable. They enjoy making grandiose promises but never hire beyond a 3 months contract. I have worked with them for 1year 1/2 while bouncing between contracts. The job turnover is so high, that my work accounts have been repeatedly deleted by mistake because they've mixed up the employees who are leaving with those who are staying. The company lacks transparency and professionalism. They adopt a veneer of being open and caring, when they only care about the volume of work you produce with little regard for your health. Working for this company resulted in a mental breakdown that I needed time off to recover from. I regret not paying attention to the red flags after they hired me. They didn't respond for 3 weeks after telling me I was hired, missed my start date and took 2 months to get me a measely 3 month contract. StudySmarter is a rudimentary content mill under the guise of a social enterprise. They care as much about their student audience as they do their content writers.
