      Not Worth it

      Pros

Work from home Choose your own shifts

      Cons

Your talents and time are exploited because there's no minimum wage. You get paid per minute of audio rather than per minute of your own time No minimum wage due to self-employment Your pay is punished if your files are inaccurate - gets cut by 60% if you can't fix all errors (I got paid about £5 total for 8 hours work) Waste of time, unnecessary stress Audio can be incomprehensible yet you're punished if you can't understand it

      Decent top-up job

      Pros

Usually plenty of work Constant, graded feedback Teaches highly valued skills Flexible hours Clear guidelines Laid-back staff with positive attitude

      Cons

Feedback can be a bit hit and miss, because it often comes down to personal opinion. Feedback on tricky bits of audio rarely takes into account the audio quality. Possibly, the feedback team have better tools for cleaning up audio, but freelancers are expected to make the audio good enough to decipher ourselves and are graded poorly for any words we don't understand. There is a format provided for inaudible audio and phonetic guesses, but you will be marked down for using it. No easy dialogue between feedback team and freelancers. Pay is very poor, about a third of what you could expect to be paid directly. Poor quality files can take up more time and no compensation is given for this. Pay is monthly, very odd for freelance/agency work.

Handy as a bit of extra income but I wouldn't recommend as anything to rely on

      Pros

Friendly team Good training Work from home Extra work available on occasion Hours to suit your own needs

      Cons

Requires own equipment (audio quality is necessary) The complicated files (e.g. four participants, two interviewers, bad quality, talking over one another) just aren't paid enough to make it worth the time. Turnarounds can be too quick, making the complicated jobs stressful as their standards are high but the time to produce the work is low

      What a lovely lot!

      Pros

I have been freelancing for the company for over 2 years now, and I absolutely love it. It's really flexible in terms of signing up for shifts, and you really can work as much or as little as you want. The Take Note office team are all lovely, responsive and really helpful if any issues arise. The team have really bent over backwards to help me out when I've needed it, and are all really understanding.

      Cons

There can be quieter months where you might not get as much work as you would like, particularly around Christmas, but this is only due to low client demand at this time of year.

Love authority and arbitrary rules? Work here and get paid worse than minimum wage!

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Working from home, flexibility, varied nature of work theme, occasional interesting files, fairly good feedback mechanism.

      Cons

LOW PAY. Arbitrary and inconsistent grammar rules that they have just made up for their clients, incredibly boring topics sometimes. If this is what represents good part-time work for university students and graduates then I despair. The pay structure means that if you get a bad file (bad quality, impenetrable accent etc) you have to accept lower pay to do harder work! And if you still can't make the most out of a good file (and yes, you can start a sentence with 'and' in English and have people understand your meaning perfectly), your pay gets docked by 60% as a punishment. Seriously? There is very little personal support other than being told when you've done something wrong and being constantly harassed by humourless emails telling you to read the latest update on their blog. Yawn.
