Self-serving management and unstable environment

Pros

You meet smart and energetic young colleagues and the partners provide good mentorship. The location is good, close to downtown Montreal, and the office space is large. You can attend French classes while you work here.

Cons

Those smart and energetic colleagues that you met yesterday, are not gonna be there tomorrow. The management are great sale persons; they delude bright PhD students and graduates with their few successful portfolio companies, sometimes bringing them in from other cities or countries, only to use them as cheap labour (2000$/month salary and no benefit or insurance) for a little while and let them go after. They use the handful successful cofounders to provide reference, not telling the story of the other 100 who left their jobs and degrees for nothing. They leverage on peoples vulnerabilities, taking mostly immigrants with visa issues and minorities. When almost every employee in a company is a minority, you can't call it diversity anymore.

Pros

You meat a lot of potential funders at TandemLauch Looking back on your time at TandemLaunch, you will understand many valuable lessons about how a manager can let their ego interfere with their work and how not to run a company.

Cons

The CEO is a complex anti-hero TandemLaunch companies generally do not ever turn a profit The first and only goal of a TandemLaunch project is to make Helge feel good about himself. Young, impressionable, EIRs might be fooled into thinking there's some bigger motive or wisdom behind the guidance you get, but there probably isn't. Trust your instincts.

Pros

An intense process that is good for practicing creativity, an opportunity to learn about the venture capital world, meeting smart immigrants. Pays but very little for a lot of work and responsibility.

Cons

Wild west, lawless, and fake it until you make it that you have never experienced before. Few great success stories, over a pile of hundreds of international students' exploitation. The closest thing to a cult, a machinery to make money and influence for others while you may or may not see the results. A very well crafted propaganda for outsiders, but very little transparency for insiders. That is why you hear very little about TL in the larger Montreal startup scene. Most EiRs are not based in Montreal, nor Quebec, but they are international students from Aisa on a temporary work permit sponsored by TL.
