Pros

Very flexible schedule, great full time benefits, some interesting toys to play with, and some smart engineers to work with and learn from. I'd give more than one star if it weren't for the con.

Cons

The CTO, period. There is no CEO, there is no management, "flat structure" means a nasty dictator allowing some engineers to serve at his pleasure. Occasionally someone will receive a "director" title, but do not mistake this for any decision making authority or being allowed to lead anything. Scapegoat is a much more accurate outcome from that title. For all the pros this company has to offer this single individual finds a way to outweigh them all, in fact he seems to enjoy it. Promoting innovation through transparency and collaboration will be the public mantra, always derived from a few cherry picked buzzwords read in various blogs, but what will actually occur is the divide and conquer strategy where engineers currently in his favor will be pitted against his current lightning rods with the goal of undermining them. If that's not enough to get them to quit rumors about those people's secret agenda will be spread until the environment is too unpleasant to remain. If those he didn't like were actually onto a good idea you should fully expect that it will become the new technical vision within a few weeks of getting rid of those people, regardless of having spent a lot of time prior denouncing those very ideas solely because they were proposed by people he didn't like. The mess created in that wake will be blamed on the very people he prevented from doing anything about it in the first place. Lather, rinse, and repeat, this latest round of turnover isn't the first time this has happened and it won't be the last.

Thank you for expressing your concerns. As your review points out, TST is a flat organization and focuses on individuals contributing and collaborating over a more hierarchical organization. We admit it is not perfect and it may not be the best environment for everyone. It is natural to blame the individual at the top as the source of all the problems. However, we pride ourselves in self-organization versus relying on one individual to figure everything out. That involves having the right team members who are willing to work through the issues and collaborate versus placing blame and waiting on others to find a solution. We also work to foster collaboration with bi-weekly Show and Tell meetings and Guilds to focus on cross-product and company wide initiatives. Do know that your voice has been heard and feedback has been shared. We take this feedback seriously and will work to improve the perception that you’ve expressed.

Pros

The gold on the gold-plated handcuffs.

Cons

If you have read any review above 3 stars, don’t be fooled. Flat-structure is not a psuedo-con, it’s a ploy of power and dictatorship. All programmers are equal, but some programmers are more equal than others. There is a hierarchy. It’s of the CTO, his minions, then everyone else. Everyone’s opinions can be swept away with his say and nothing can be done to prevent or persuade... you must simply obey. So many terrible decisions have been made this way, not only for the company but for the workers in it. New front-end architecture written behind closed doors for 6 months, rears it’s head and guess what? It’s dumb. New deployment architecture written on Docker that will revolutionize how we do things… how’d it go you ask? Broke production for about a month and everyone was left with frustration and short answers from the only 2 that touched the code. Oh hey, remember that front-end architecture? Whoops, breaks all of our automation testing that we spent 3 years writing… guess you ruby developers better learn javascript. *6 months later* Actually you know that front-end architecture you’ve been working in? React is the hot new thing right? Screw it, let’s go with that… that should get the new developers in here. It won’t. People know now. They’ve heard about the environment. They’ve heard about the turn around. They’ve heard about how you crack the whip with those you have left. For those who can’t tell what it’s like to work there, other than reading reviews; like having your morale crushed? Carpet pulled out beneath you? Never knowing how the overlord feels about you? Will today be the day? Did I commit enough lines of code? That feature was too small to appease him. Am I keeping up to a metric that fluctuates with mood and is completely invisible? Oh god, last week was all bug fixes… Hope you enjoyed my little playlet.

Pros

The compensation if good and they do attract some very bright engineers. The turnover is incredible. If you like who interviews you, don’t expect them to be there in 6 months. 1/3 of their engineers have quit in the last 3 months and this is not the first time that’s happened. Yes, that’s the most positive thing I have to say.

Cons

If you’re debating on taking a job here, I strongly recommend searching your network to try to find someone who has worked than for more than a couple months. This is not the place you want to roll the dice and write off a few bad reviews as people who just personally dislike management. It is true that the bad reviews are written by people who personally dislike the CTO. It is also true that everyone who works there for 6+months dislikes him. Bad management and disgruntled employees exist almost everywhere. I have never seen anything close to the dysfunction at this place and I never would have thought one person(even if he’s in charge) could create such a negative culture. You’ll hear the phrase “flat structure” thrown around a lot. It is used as a justification for management’s behavior. If you’re thinking it means empowering engineers, removing unnecessary rules and fostering an open, collaborative culture then you are in for a shock. If you see the CTO talking to an engineer in his office the conversation is one of two things: - The CTO is saying something extremely creepy about one of the female employees while the engineer tries to forget everything he is hearing. - The CTO is telling the engineer about the sinister motives of the other engineers. A secret plan is needed to undermine and discredit these other engineers. The first few times this happens you’ll probably believe that these other engineers are bad actors and this is the way forward. What you’ll soon realize is that no one is immune to to being the target and the more work you do, the more likely you’ll do something to get on the radar and be a target. The CTO is paranoid and delusional. He believes everyone is out to get him, so the good list and bad list changes rapidly. The CTO is also a coward, so none of this is talked about in the open. The CTO brags that he gets people he doesn’t like to quit without ever having to talk to them. He calls it his “whisper campaign” and believes it’s a feature, not a bug. An enormous amount of engineers’ energy is spent try to determine the current “web of hate” so that they don’t waste their time building something that the CTO has already determined must fail. There are 2 paths there. Try to be as average as possible to stay off the radar or try to make good software until you can’t take it anymore.

Thank you for your feedback. As stated in your review, TST is a flat organization and as a result it’s easy to place blame when there is one person in charge. This type of team structure and the culture that it fosters is not for everyone. We believe strongly in self-organization, holding ourselves and each other accountable, and in working collaboratively to solve problems. Our CTO embodies this philosophy by allowing the teams to work through issues and only getting involved when absolutely necessary. This involvement can be perceived incorrectly and we believe that’s what has happened in your case. Our team consists of many female employees at all functions, and we pride ourselves in treating them with the same level of respect as their male counterparts. As there has never been a complaint made, if you know of a specific instance where inappropriate behavior occurred, please contact us ASAP. While we appreciate your perspective, we hope that the readers of this review will also look at the other reviews here and weigh this perspective against those.
