Worst leadership I’ve seen since my last army deployment

Pros

The field is interesting, if nothing else. The mission is unclear, but from what vague hints employees do receive about the actual goals of the company, it seems neat.

Cons

I was hired to perform a very specific set of functions. After 3 weeks, I was told that, due to my technical background, I’d be given an additional set of functions to perform, along with a major task that nobody there knew how to do. I was asked how long it would take to complete the task. After planning, I created numerous very specific tickets, and told my management it would take 10 weeks. I was told I had 2 weeks. I undertook the task, neglecting the purposes for which I’d been hired. After working 6 weeks of nights and weekends, with no assistance until the last day of the project and with numerous major overhauls demanded at the direction of my manager, I completed the project and was immediately let go literally the exact moment my successful build finished deploying. Huge waste of time, effort, and resources. Luckily, given the fact that management at all levels - not just mine - is so poor, the company will likely not last long enough to cause many more of the same sorts of problems I dealt with.

We are sorry to hear you didn’t have a good experience at True Anomaly. We understand that being subject to a layoff is not fun for anyone, however, it was a necessary step to restructure the business, eliminating some departments and which included some specific leadership that did not match with the knowledge and capabilities needed for our next stage. While we can’t be sure that the leadership you speak of is still at True Anomaly, we are working swiftly to ensure we have the right leaders setting the right tone in alignment with our values and leadership principles. We’ve conducted, and will continue to conduct, listening sessions and surveys with our employees to truly understand their perspective which is very important to us, and evolve the business for the best employee experience.

Ego Over Excellence

Business outlook

Pros

Competitive benefits and the chance to work on something that could have been truly innovative if managed properly.

Cons

Working at True Anomaly was a frustrating experience because the company’s leadership prioritizes ego over actual expertise. Unfortunately, immaturity at the top sets the tone for everything else. There’s a culture of gaslighting and defensiveness — if you raise concerns or highlight real technical or operational issues, you’re often dismissed, told to “just figure it out,” or even reprimanded for saying there’s a problem. The company pushes to launch products prematurely, cutting corners on functionality and quality just to meet artificial milestones. Instead of pulling together to troubleshoot, management often blames individuals, which leads to poor morale and a revolving door of talented people leaving. The team at the Long Beach location seems a bit more insulated, but the Gravity Works CO office suffers from particularly low morale and poor leadership responsiveness. Toxic leadership, lack of accountability, stifling culture that discourages honesty and collaboration, rampant burnout, and exceptionally high turnover. It’s disappointing because the potential was there — but poor leadership has turned it into a cautionary tale. This organization represents the worst of start-up culture wrapped into one: ego-driven decisions, unchecked immaturity, and a constant cycle of ambition without accountability.

Needs Improvement

Pros

The company’s vision and goals are impressive. The speed at which they develop spacecraft is remarkable. There are plenty of opportunities to explore new roles due to the extensive workload.

Cons

The work environment is unhealthy. Leadership and management set unrealistic schedules and standards, then express surprise when employees struggle to meet them. Management often belittles the efforts required, suggesting they could easily handle the tasks themselves. There's a clear divide between the “in” crowd, who make decisions and disregard others’ suggestions and opinions, and the “out” crowd. Communication from upper management is inadequate, and there's poor communication between teams. The strong desire to stand out and be different from other companies often ends up harming the company. The reasons for layoffs were never fully explained, despite the company continuing to hire. Some layoffs seemed aimed at removing individuals who openly disagreed with management.

We acknowledge that TA has been a very rapid-moving start-up, learning as we go, and some aspects could have been better. This is why, as you know being a current employee, we have created a new communications architecture, restructuring among many things, bi-monthly All Hands Meetings. We’ve had two of these meetings in the past month, followed up with all-company employee survey, soliciting anonymous employee feedback about the meetings, with a request for agenda topics. We also host AMA’s at the end of every meeting where we answer any question asked, and summarize themes. Even (our CEO) addressed the reason for layoffs in May when they occurred, again during the all-company offsite, and most recently in our last All Hands a week ago. We understand that layoffs are scary and disruptive, however these occurred more than 5 months ago and the restructure was necessary for the future success of the business. We hope you will be able to move on and move forward. We sincerely encourage you to be solution-oriented and proactive with your feedback internally to the company. If feel you aren’t being heard internally, then reach out to someone on the Exec Team or People Team. Most of our employees are excited and invested in our future, and thus seek ways to better the business—we encourage you to do so as well if you feel this is the right company for you.
