Not the Startup experience you expect

Pros

Excellent community of employees, most are fresh out of college and rearing to prove themselves. Enjoyable team building events when they are held (CEO is fun when drunk). Coming in, looks like another normal startup in downtown SF full of diverse young professionals with mix and match desks/chairs lol. Definitely fun until you start seeing all the cracks and inconstancies.

Cons

Poor management and lying to investors by omitting facts and misleading details about company numbers. Shady business practices resulting in our company's IP being blocked on a regular basis. Specifically, this was due to spamming other social marketing platforms under false names and identities to advertise Verlocal and its classes, going directly against terms of service on Meetup.com and Eventbrite. This eventually resulted in a Cease and Desist letter threatening to sue. Very high turnover rate of employees due to long hours and no overtime pay. No flexibility of schedule -- in at precisely 9AM each day and working until 7:30PM earliest. And sometimes weekends. Many promises from management, but zero follow through. Many employees lost their jobs due to grudges from CEO (saving face) and not actual performance related reasons.

Pros

I'll be honest, the team is great. They are able to bring on eager and excited young graduates, so the energy amongst your coworkers is the only pro to this work place. No positives other than your friends you will make with your coworkers, not the management. It will be a relationship based around a mutual hate and despise for the management(the CEO went out of his way to leave a unjust and undeserving terrible reference for me as I was seeking new employment. You had it coming. Just like you have your next failed startup coming) I worked directly under Will, the CEO (or whom we soon termed as "Kim Jong (w)ill" due to his tyrannical dictator like style micro management), so he shared his personal thoughts and feelings with me as I worked late into the night and it would just be us two in the office. Hearing these opinions and feelings, raised a huge red flag for me. He has a problem separating work and life and takes everything personally(he will take this personally as well). I remember that he even went off because a member of the marketing team was not responding to his Facebook messages over the weekend... He went as far as to ask me and his BD manager if he should fire him AT THAT MOMENT... BE WARNED I learned a whole lot, thats for sure, but that will be the case anywhere if you dedicate that much time. My suggestion would be to use all that time at another company. A company that will pay you correctly for your over time and be grateful for your EXTRA and OVER THE TOP performance. At Verlocal, you can expect these (at least) 10 hour days to be the STANDARD and what is EXPECTED.

Cons

EVERYTHING. SERIOUSLY IF YOU HAVE OTHER OPTIONS, KEEP THEM OPEN AND PURSUE THEM. THIS SHOULD ONLY BE TAKEN UP IF YOU HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO AND NEED TO GET PAID OR GAIN EXPERIENCE!!! HE HAS FAILED 2 OR 3 PREVIOUS STARTUPS BEFORE AND THIS CURRENT STARTUP HE HAS GONE THROUGH TWO ENTIRE TEAMS, ALL OF WHOM HAD LEFT TO ESCAPE SUCH A BAD ENVIRONMENT OR WERE FIRED. IT SHOULD BE NO SURPRISE THAT THERE IS A CONSTANT NEW WAVE OF NEW GRAD NEW HIRES. HE HAS TO HAVE A BLANK SLATE EVERY 3 - 6 MONTHS WITH HIS EMPLOYEE BECAUSE HIS TYRANNICAL DICTATOR LIKE (KIM JONG (w)ILL WAS COINED FOR A REASON) PERSONALITY IS BOUND TO COME OUT. HE HAS SERIOUS ISSUES. HE CUT AN ENTIRE TEAM(THAT IS RIGHT THE WHOLE TEAM) IN ONE NIGHT. HE ALSO SEES HIS EMPLOYEES AS NOTHING BUT REPLACEABLE OBJECTS STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE. Also I know that the positive reviews on here are fake. I have spoken with former team members that said they were asked to leave positive reviews by management.

Worst company to work for

Pros

There isn't any pros. Not any. Except having a job easily right after college. But don't dream, there's no benefits, and the pay is very very low

Cons

Bad management, no strategy, boring and useless work. You work over 50/70 hours a week. You cannot be creative. You have to do exactly what the CEO tells you to do. The pay is bad, there's no benefit. You do not learn.
