Toxic professional environment

Pros

Nice location, the view is absolutely beautiful including breakout areas, table tennis, beer keg. Monday catered lunch and variety of snacks are provided daily.

Cons

Childish atmosphere with little to no ethics. Backstabbing begins at the executive level and filters down through the staff. Some employees really do care and work extremely hard, but their hard work is not recognized. Promotion is not based on performance but is a factor of relationships with top management. They like to play favorites with their employees. I was really excited to work here but sometimes the great reviews you read on Glassdoor aren't accurate. Don’t be fooled. Managers write fake positive reviews. Ask a lot of questions before you decide to join. This company is run like a startup, but they outgrew startup size and maturity and need to stop justifying their underdevelopment and shortcomings in process beneath this trendy label.

I appreciate the feedback and your time at our company. We are consistently working to improve how we assess candidates and definitely recommend that interviewees get to know their teams before accepting offers. Wish you the best of luck!

Owners will Sell the company, unprofessional, unorganized, Frat house

Pros

Office kitchen, keg, casual work environment, some employees were actually helpful and cared about other employees

Cons

First, the owners of this company will sell it once the price is right. They did it with their first company and they will do it again. They really don’t care about their employees, customers, or product. At the end of the day both owners just want to sell that business to set them up for the rest of their lives. This company was the most unorganized and unprofessional place I have ever worked. During the interview process the team I was joining just tried to sell me on ‘how great the company is.’ I only worked here for three months and in that time three team leads left and three general employees moved on. There are no expectations set up for new employees, no training provided, no mentor program, no HR department, but you do get to meet with the owners who will tell you that you need to be an expert at everything. I knew within a few weeks of being there it was not a place I wanted to be and started looking for a new job right away. I’ve actually been in contact with a few of the people who left, one of whom interviewed me, she said during the interview she wanted to tell me it’s a terrible place to work and that I shouldn’t accept the job. Another one of the team leads who left contacted me after I’d moved on and told me how poorly the products behind the scenes are run and maintained. Said it was only a matter of time before they have some catastrophic failures. During my time there I met with my manager one on one three times, the first day, end of week one, and when I told her I was resigning. She canceled on me three separate planned meetings, two of which she missed because she left work in the middle of the day because she was too hungover from the night before. I received zero guidance and training while I was there, they kept touting ‘this is a place where you can make your own path.’ When I tried to make my own path I got nothing but road blocks with my other team members saying ‘no you can’t do that, but here is a bunch of busy work that I don’t want to do.’ I spent 75% of my days in meetings listening to team members treat clients like they are morons and giving them a gold star when they complete the most remedial task. When they say they ‘solve creative problems’ basically means when a client asks for a change or update within the software whoever is running that meeting goes into the system and flips a switch, that’s about as creative problem solving as it gets. Most everyone on my team was a bunch of trained monkey’s pushing buttons, the job required zero actual computer skills just needed obedience. The team I was on talked bad about each other and every other department behind their backs. No one took accountability for anything, blame was always pushed off onto someone else. If the client wasn’t happy the ‘experience’ department blamed the product team for not getting them what they wanted, the product team blamed development for not updating the product correctly, the development team blamed the experience team that they didn’t explain the clients needs clear enough. But what was the worst is the way they talked down about their clients both the experience team and the owners. It was said multiple times in public meetings talking about how much the head of their largest client is an idiot and they only deal with her because of how much the account is worth. The entire plan of this company is to upsell so they purposely leave parts of the software out so that the client is forced to buy more and more. Basically this place is a frat house, pretty sure everyone on my team was in a sorority/fraternity and loved talked about the ‘glory days’. If you don’t want to be part of the club it is quickly apparent they do not want you in the company. I’ve seen them layoff 4 people for no reason other than ‘they didn’t fit in.’ If you have actual computer skills and care about advancing your career this is not the place you want to be.

I think employees that worked here a couple years ago, or even 6 months ago, might not fully recognize us today. Dramatically increasing our headcount, we've been busy addressing some of the tactical issues you brought up including: a new hire training program; implementing an industry leading benefits package; ensuring all employees with at least 1 year experience have stock options; and hiring a new Director of HR. It is not unusual for hyper-growth companies like ours to experience some growing pains, that said our organization's commitment to our clients and employees is unwavering. At Yello we are committed to creating a transparent and authentic working environment for all of our employees and I am deeply disappointed that you felt your experience was different. What your feedback demonstrates to me is that we need to do a better job of articulating the values of the company to each and every new employee; thank you for bringing this to my attention. Best of luck to you in your career.

Pros

- Great views/location - Free food - Leadership tries to be transparent - Nearly everyone at Yello is incredibly bright and capable

Cons

- CEO is a micro-manager. You hire subject matter experts for a reason, let them do their jobs. - Certain VPs and department heads are running their teams into the ground with lack of direction. They're all smart people, but some of them clearly have no idea how to be true team leaders that foster high morale and open communication. My team especially was incredibly siloed and dysfunctional. - The company's plan for the future is very unclear. Priorities and direction are constantly changing, from smaller things like launch dates to huge things like the product road map, who we're selling to, and overall direction the company wants to take. - Truly a sinking ship if the People team and leadership don't figure out a way to turn things around. Turnover has been incredibly high both on my team and other departments, and employee NPS has been plummeting. When asked what they'll do to fix it, leadership just gives a generic, canned response about how important this is to them and they're working on it. No amount of free snacks or lunch & learns can make up for a toxic work environment.
