The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has placed a new contract through the Aurora Engineering Delivery Partnership (EDP) for a programme targeted to improve the survivability and protection of Land Armoured Vehicles in the British Army. The programme which will Leonardo lead a team of major defence companies under the name of Team Minerva, is the successor to the Leonardo-led Icarus Technology Demonstrator Programme (TDP), which was concluded in July 2021. The new contract represents the second development phase of the UK Modular Integrated Protection System (MIPS) programme for the development of a new pan-fleet active protection system architecture for British Army vehicles, including tanks and armoured personnel carriers, to handle existing, new and future threats.
The DragonFire laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) system has achieved the UK’s first high-power firing of a laser weapon against aerial targets during a trial at the MOD Hebrides Range. The latest trial, delivered by Dstl and the DragonFire partners – MBDA, Leonardo and QinetiQ – builds on a series of highly successful trials, including the first static high-power laser firing of a sovereign UK capability and demonstration of the DragonFire system’s ability to track moving air and sea targets with very high accuracy at long range.
The next generation radar which will be used by RAF Typhoon pilots of the future has been fitted to an aircraft ahead of flight trials. The European Common Radar System (ECRS) Mark 2 radar is being developed by Leonardo and integrated onto Typhoon by BAE Systems. It features an innovative multi-functional array (MFA) that can perform both traditional radar functions such as search and targeting, as well as electronic warfare tasks. A prototype of the radar has been undergoing ground-based testing in a unique test facility at BAE Systems’ site in Warton, Lancashire in recent months before being fitted on to BS116, a UK test and evaluation aircraft, by BAE Systems and Leonardo UK engineers.
