On Transgender Day of Visibility, Ivy Speight, who chairs Leonardo UK’s Pride network group, shared a personal insight into being transgender.
Leonardo is collaborating with New Zealand industry – including the development of Small to Medium Enterprises – through a set of comprehensive Memorandum of Understandings (MoU). The MoU outlines technical and programme support, operations, maintenance and job creation, which will foster a symbiotic relationship as part of Leonardo’s offer for the country’s maritime helicopter replacement (MHR) programme with its latest-generation AW159 multi-role helicopter.

Leonardo’s Osprey 30 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar is a state-of-the-art sensor that currently equips the US Navy’s (USN) MQ-8C Fire Scout. This platform is one of the most advanced Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAS) in naval service anywhere in the world, employing the latest technologies for maritime operations. This includes Leonardo’s Osprey 30 radar, known in USN service as the AN/ZPY-8. We talk to Capt. George Matich’s contribution to national and international defence and security, along with his academic research, was wide-ranging, and he left a significant legacy when he passed away in 2021. Recognising the impact George had during his lifetime, and could continue to have on future generations, his family established the George Matich Memorial Award. Leonardo, where George was Chief Technologist, is honoured to support this important prize.
On the 23rd February in Rome, Leonardo held its second Annual Springboard Conference for women working across its global business. Following the success of last year’s inaugural conference in the UK, the 2024 conference was held in the prestigious setting of Villa Miani, overlooking the Eternal City. Over 200 Leonardo colleagues from the company’s sites in Italy, UK, USA, Switzerland, France and Poland came together for the conference entitled 'Empowering you to lead your future'.
Fiona Clark, Head of Capability (EW Sensors) at Leonardo UK, won the Princess Royal’s WISE Lifetime Achievement Award on the 20th February, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to STEM outreach and her professional achievements during the past four decades. The WISE Awards celebrate outstanding women in STEM, as well as organisations that are making impactful changes to their gender balance. This year is the first time that the Princess Royal has given her name to the Lifetime Achievement Award.
A NASA satellite launched on 8 February from Cape Canaveral is fitted with a sensor built at Leonardo in Southampton that is so sensitive, it will give NASA unprecedented levels of information about phytoplankton populations that are vital to the health of the global ocean ecosystem.
Leonardo proudly delivers more than 60% of the avionics for the Eurofighter Typhoon, which helps protect the fighter and ensures its operational readiness. The company is also ensuring Typhoon readiness and availability in other ways, including delivering avionics support for Royal Air Force Typhoons via the Joint Avionics Service (JAS). Leonardo is now exploring ways to ensure that this is future-proofed and that the aircraft remains prepared for the future fight.
