The defence sector has seen greater collaboration in recent times; a trend that Leonardo has been at the heart of, being a critical member of several teaming agreements on major UK military programmes. In “The Power of Teamwork”, we look at the value of such an approach, with industry and government aligned at the earliest stages.
In an era propelled by technological innovation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a cornerstone of progress. However, alongside its promises of efficiency and advancement, come inherent risks that demand attention. Katie Hawkins, Principal Consultant with Leonardo’s UK Cyber & Security business, explores the intricate domain of AI assurance, shedding light on the specific threats to AI systems and the proactive measures necessary to counter them.
Leonardo’s Future Programmes Group was established in 2022 as a Centre of Excellence for emerging rotorcraft technologies, and this innovation hub is already proving to be a game-changer for the future of helicopter design and development. We take a deeper dive into the Future Programmes Group and its vision going forward, and how it is responding to – and informing – the future requirements of military helicopters.
At the end of April, Leonardo announced the launch of a new programme in partnership with Future Leaders, a social mobility partner committed to supporting career pathways for young people. Future Leaders currently works with 300 schools offering a range of activities, programmes, work experience and mentoring. The six-month programme will support 25 young women from schools in Luton and North London, in developing their resilience, skills and confidence, to help them achieve their career aspirations.
In October 2013, the BBC broadcast its ambitious nature documentary The Great British Year. Each of the four seasons presents unique situations for Britain's environment and to help capture the cold dark nights of winter, the BBC turned to Leonardo. For more than 65 years, engineers at our sites across Britain have been developing secure communications and surveillance systems, including thermal imaging technology. With the ability to capture high-resolution imagery while operating in the most challenging environments around the world, our technology has brought pioneering new perspectives to BBC wildlife documentaries for more than 10 years. Here, we look back at some of the greatest moments captured by our cameras for TV audiences.
While employees working at our Yeovil site have volunteered for local causes and organisations for many decades, this was the first time that an official day of volunteering has been created by the company. A group of Leonardo graduates came up with the idea when they saw the potential to focus efforts according to specific local needs. Our senior leader were so impressed by the graduates’ concept for their ‘Be a Saint Day’, that they are working with them to make the initiative a regular event in the annual calendar.
Since the dawn of combat air, there has been a requirement for pilots and crew to be able to observe their environment and detect an adversary quicker than they can be detected. The pilot’s eyes as a detection method quickly gave way to more advanced electronic technologies, particularly radar. The rapid advances of combat aircraft seen over the last century is also the story of the advance of radar, and here we explore how Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) is now the pinnacle of this technology.
Following an announcement by Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, the DragonFire laser weapon system will rapidly develop from a demonstration programme to an operational capability for the Royal Navy. The UK DragonFire programme brings together the best of UK industry. It leverages MBDA’s decades of weapon system manufacturing expertise, Leonardo’s position as a world-leading authority in laser technology, electro-optics and advanced targeting, and QinetiQ’s experience as the only UK company to successfully develop and safely operate high-energy laser sources in the UK and coherent beam-combining technology.
Employees from across Leonardo UK sites worked alongside veterans recently to plant 4,000 saplings in the Usk Valley in Wales, creating hedgerows to build biodiversity for decades to come. Leonardo embarked on this initiative in collaboration with Carma and the Green Task force, creating hundreds of days of employment for veterans, whilst helping biodiversity in the area.
Published to coincide with the 2024 Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability conference, Leonardo’s Scott Bartlett, UK Head of Capability Development - Cyber Security & Resilience, assesses the security implications of AI technology in the defence sector.
