Earlier this week, Northern Trust and the EMEA employee led Black Business Resource Council hosted students from the New City College in Hackney, for the 5th and final session of the 2024 “Amplify Me” program facilitated by the Local Village Network (LVN) charity at our Canary Wharf Office in London. The LVN “Amplify Me” program teaches students the importance of networking, mentoring, soft skills, and career pathways in preparation for life after education. Over the last four weeks, a group of Volunteers from Northern Trust have mentored the students participating in the program. Topics included insights into the world of work, the power and impact of building networks, and understanding transferable skills and how they are needed for employment. For the final session, the students visited our London office and met their mentors once again and then took part in a speed networking game to put into practice the skills learnt over the program. This was followed by an impactful speech by John McCareins (Head of International Northern Trust Asset Management) - where he shared his experiences and encouraged the students to have a positive mental attitude and continue to build personal courage by trying to do things that are out of their comfort zone. This was the first cohort of the program, and the intention is to continue to collaborate with both LVN and New City College for future events to foster positive and impactful engagement within the community.

We were proud sponsors and partners to last week’s impactful Black Professionals & Leaders Dinner held at Arizona State University. The dinner, presented by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Zeta Alpha Chapter, allowed us to support efforts to bridge the gap between black undergraduate students and working professionals. This event provided the space for these students to engage with working professionals and better understand the journey from college to professional life. Our own LaDonna Corn MBA, MPA and Gretchen E.F. Williams, MBA joined students for the dinner and shared their perspectives on life at Northern Trust and their own careers to date. Their key messages for the students on the night were “your mind is very important and as you think so you are, believe in yourself” and to “never give up on your dreams and understand you might have to pivot sometimes, but it does not impact who you are”.

Learn about Lisa Sherchan’s journey into the world of finance at Northern Trust, how her background has shaped how she works on our trading desk and how important diversity is for her and her team. Additionally, she unpacks the challenges she faced in breaking into finance and how she overcame the dreaded “imposter syndrome”. “I think it’s important that we have gender and ethnic diversity in the team, it brings different perspectives, which improves decision-making. Being able to have these different discussions means we are providing the best for our clients. I also believe it improves company culture, and you learn about different backgrounds. In that way, you create a pathway for the future generation because it’s encouraging to come into a company culture where it’s very accepting. It’s quite exciting to be part of this shift in the industry, and I feel motivated by it.”
An insight into Northern Trust Arizona Take a look and hear from some of our ‘partners’ in our Tempe office and how our corporate values meet with our people’s personal values. “Northern Trust is a relationship company. When people think of the term relationship, they think of affinity kinship. When I think of relationships, I think of trust because, without trust, it's hard to have a meaningful relationship. Northern Trust believes in a culture of trust. It's how we lead, it's how we treat our clients, it's how we interact as human beings, it's not just a word in our name.” Kent Thomas, Managing Site Director at Northern Trust Tempe. #MadeForGreater #LifeAtNT
