Nicolas Espesson, Head of Performance Optimization at Renault Racing, was a test engineer when F1 engine innovations inspired our innovative hybrid powertrain: E-TECH. Starting in 2011, Renault engineers specialized in electric vehicles joined our F1 teams to develop the future F1 V6 hybrid engine. Formula 1 engine engineers were therefore divided into two categories: "thermal" and "electrical". But a third category quickly emerged to make the link between them, those of "energy management" These new forms of ?energy management? are extremely innovative because they use a combination of big data, data learning and even artificial intelligence to operate! To know more about our F1 technology and how they impacted E-TECH, discover the new episode of our E-TECH SAGA here
How did we build our first hybrid prototype? Laurent Taupin, project manager at Renault, was among the teams to give life to the LEGO concept, prototyped in 2010 by Nicolas Fremau. From a proof of concept to a real working car, the work was incredible to be able to show to car at the Paris Motor Show, back in 2014. Lightweight, ultra-low fuel consumption and combining both thermal & electric engine? it was definitely a challenge! The full episode 2 of the E-TECH Saga is out now.
Today, let's meet Nicolas Fremau! Engineer and powertrain & hybrid expert, Nicolas and his colleagues were able to drive & lead a major technological revolution for the industry. Starting Christmas 2010, Nicolas began experimenting with LEGO - yes, you read that right! Nicolas was convinced from the beginning that an innovative and very efficient hybrid engine was possible. He began work on a prototype transmission dedicated to a future world-class hybrid engine built to scale using small multicolored plastic bricks. Then, preparatory engineering work was carried out, in particular in the Technocentre and Lardy workshops. Ten years later, 150 patents have been filed around the E-TECH technology! Nicolas' determination and genius made it possible to give life to a first E-TECH prototype in less than 14 months. To discover more in our Episode 1 of E-TECH SAGA!
