At Scott Logic during LGBT+ History Month 🌈, we’re drawing inspiration from LGBT+ pioneers in our industry. Today, we celebrate Edith "Edie" Windsor (1929–2017), who was a technology manager at IBM and an American LGBT rights activist. In 1968, she attained the title designating the highest level technical position at IBM, Senior Systems Programmer. When Edie's wife died in 2009, she inherited her estate but was prevented from taking advantage of the marital tax deduction available to heterosexual couples. She sued the US federal government and was the lead plaintiff in the 2013 Supreme Court case 'United States v. Windsor', considered a landmark legal victory for the same-sex marriage movement in the USA. The Obama administration and federal agencies extended rights, privileges and benefits to married same-sex couples because of the decision. You can find out more about Edie Windsor here https://ediewindsor.com/ #LGBTHistoryMonth #LGBTQIA #WomenInTech #MarriageEquality

At Scott Logic during LGBT+ History Month 🌈, we’re drawing inspiration from LGBT+ pioneers in our industry. Today, we celebrate Lynn Conway, an American computer scientist, electrical engineer, inventor and transgender activist. Her work in complex microchip design and fabrication paved the way for the modern microchips found in almost all high-technology systems, including computers, mobile phones and the internet. This pioneering work was done in what Conway calls ‘stealth-mode’ after she completed her gender transition in 1968. Since coming out in 1998, she has worked to protect and expand the rights of transgender people, and maintains a well-known website that provides medical resources and emotional advice.
The world is now dependent on the digital sector – a sector that emits 3.8% of the total Green House Gas emissions of the planet. In this post, Harry Goode explores a number of ways in which technology contributes to climate change, and ponders how it might also contribute towards solutions.
