Did you know all employees now have the legal right to request flexible working? You can request a change to the numbers of hours you work, when you start or finish work, the days you work or where you work. We're pleased to see this new legislation come into play as we believe that flexible working is key to helping people balance work, life and preparing for the future they want. It's good for employees, employers and the economy! You can find out more about flexible working here: www.thephoenixgroup.com/careers/flexible-working/
Congratulations to the 757 Career Ready students who graduated across Scotland recently. Our wonderful colleagues volunteered to mentor 152 students on a 4-week paid internship, helping them gain valuable work experience and learn about the types of career they could pursue. We loved supporting this year’s Career Ready programme, because we believe all young people from all backgrounds deserve the opportunity to access a rewarding career to help them prepare for the future they want. Our CEO, Rakesh Thakrar plays a pivotal role in supporting this initiative: ‘We're proud to work with Career Ready, providing students with valuable mentorship and insight into our business. After measuring the impact of this programme we have doubled the number of opportunities that we offer in 2024 and I look forward to meeting our new Career Ready students during their 4-week internship' We hope the students enjoyed the graduation celebrations as much as we did! We’ve been honoured with the Best Employer for Older Workers award at the WM PeopleTop Employer Awards 2024. This award serves as a recognition of our commitment in supporting our older colleagues with a wide range of practical support, such as midlife MOTs and carers support to championing age-inclusivity. We were one of the first organisations to sign the Age-friendly Employer Pledge and we also recognise that many colleagues may also have loved ones to care for, so we offer flexible working, 10 days’ paid carers leave and the opportunity to take a 1-12 month career break. 👏 Well done to our colleagues involved in helping our organisation support age-inclusivity.
Edinburgh witnessed an inspiring wave of community spirit as over 50 of our Phoenix Heroes got together for our inaugural Big Volunteer Day. Their collective efforts led to a remarkable clean-up, collecting 80 bags of waste, which approximated to 35 stones, from the bustling streets of Edinburgh. The camaraderie and impactful endeavour not only left the streets cleaner but also instilled a stronger sense of community, echoing our commitment to environmental responsibility and local engagement. Kudos to our Phoenix Heroes for embodying the spirit of service and making our first Big Volunteer Day a resounding success!
We're really happy to announce we have leapt to 14th in the 2023 Social Mobility Employer Index, up from 24th in 2022. The index gauges employers on promoting equal opportunities. For us, talent knows no boundaries, and every background deserves a chance to shine. Rakesh Thakrar, our CFO and Social Mobility Sponsor, emphasises our 2024 focus on understanding our diverse representation and offering work experience to underprivileged students. ‘I am delighted to see that we are making real progress in the area of social mobility. Our focus for 2024 will be on providing more opportunities for those from lower socio-economic backgrounds whilst also collecting data from within our organisation. This internal data will show if we are truly reflective of society and the customers we serve. We are committed to drive forward on our social mobility aims, taking action to increase opportunity for all colleagues, enabling more people to reach their potential’ 🚀

We are proud to share that we have become one of the first organisations in the UK to join forces with the Living Wage Foundation and sign up as a Living Pension Employer to help address the problem of inadequate pension saving. This reflects our Group’s commitment to being a leading employer and its focus on helping to close the retirement savings gap. The Living Pension is a voluntary savings target for employers who want to help workers build up a pension pot that will provide enough income to meet basic everyday needs in retirement. Employers signing up to the Living Pension Standard agree to contribute at least £1,448, or 7% of a Living Wage workers salary each year. Phoenix Group fully supports the objectives of the Living Pension Standard. We contribute 10% to our employees’ pensions with an additional 2% matching element through our main pension scheme, and a default employee contribution for new joiners of 2%.
