Spending 40 hours or more of your precious time every week doing one job can be frustrating for many people, especially if your heart isn’t in it.
Ask yourself, could you do a part-time job instead?
Sometimes, releasing yourself from the chains of full-time work can be the answer to a good work-life balance and a happy life.
Exploring the possibilities of part-time hours
If you’re currently employed instead of leaving your job to go and find a part-time position have a chat with your employer and tell them what you’re thinking. A good employer will try to accommodate your needs; a good employer also knows that if you're struggling with full-time hours, you’re not going to be as productive as you could be. It’s common knowledge that improvements in productivity ultimately rely on working smarter, not longer.
If your employer can’t accommodate you, then don’t worry because there are many jobs you can do part-time. If you’re not currently employed and you’re considering part-time, then this list should give you some ideas.
Dog Walker
You’re going to have to like dogs to do this one, but if you do, then it’s a great part-time job. Be prepared though, for walking dogs in all weather, they don’t mind that it’s raining, they’ll play ball in all weather. So if a bit of rain doesn’t put you off and you have the stamina, get on your wellies, pack some poop bags and get dog walking.
Delivery Driver
You’ll need a full clean driving licence for this job, and some sense of direction even with the help of a sat nav. If you’re somewhat clumsy, then this job might not be suitable for you due to some parcels containing fragile or expensive items. You will also have to be punctual because customers may expect their parcels within an agreed time window, if you don’t arrive within that time then your customer service skills may be tested.
Retail Assistant
Some retail outlets offer many different shifts to choose from, not just your regular morning or afternoon sessions. Retail comes in many guises, from fashion to pets, supermarkets to bespoke artisan shops, there’s one for every individual preference. A good tactic to get your foot in the door is to approach them before seasonal events, like Black Friday, Christmas, New Year sales, holiday season etc.…
Warehouse Assistant
If you’re not a people’s person, then you could always apply for a warehouse job. More and more people are shopping online, and that means more people are required to sort and organise all those parcels. It might not be the most exciting job however if you’re only going to be doing it part time because having a work-life balance is what’s important then that’s what you need to focus on.
Front of House Staff
Waiters, waitresses, bartenders, receptionists are all popular part-time jobs. Night owls tend to love the unsociable hours of hospitality but if you’re not a night owl don’t worry because breakfast, brunch and afternoon tea are all events in hospitality that need catering for.
As long as you’re a people person with plenty of common sense, hospitality is a relatively easy industry to break into.
