New year, new job? Well the Glassdoor annual jobs report could be a good place to get inspiration. The annual report ranks the best jobs throughout the UK, using three factors to create the ranking; earning potential, overall job satisfaction rating and number of available openings. Giving a good sense of the best roles in the market today.
You can take a look at the best jobs here, but with such a report comes a good question - how future-proof are these jobs and how does your job hold up against the rapidly evolving employment landscape?
With technology continually advancing, many roles will be lost to automation and artificial intelligence, one example is Amazon which has replaced many of the factory workers with robots and we’ve all encountered the ever growing changes to retail with automated checkouts and online ordering. The shift is well underway, making a huge impact in almost every sector.
In addition, this generation is hugely defined by a need to create more inspiring work places and investing heavily in building company culture - which is clearly evident in many of the company reviews we read on Glassdoor. These combined shape the future of work, challenging what we know and perhaps making many feel nervous about their job security. Although whilst some jobs are lost, it’s important to remember new roles are created as the market changes. Before Facebook arrived, we didn’t have roles such as ‘social media manager’ and ‘social strategist’ and before we all had powerful mobile computers in our pockets, we didn’t see ‘mobile marketing manager’ and ‘mobile user experience designer’ - new opportunities are created all the time, but it’s important to think ahead and plan accordingly.
In the 2018 report, Marketing Manager came out on top - a role which is generally versatile in many companies. Marketing automation systems help marketing managers to become more effective by providing rapid access to data, enabling more efficiency and return on any marketing spend. It’s not clear if a machine could replace a Marketing Manager, but it’s unlikely for sometime.
Also in the top 5; Operations Manager, Audit Manager, Finance Manager and Product Manager. What’s interesting is how the top roles on the report for this year are still more traditional, when many would expect new tech roles to dominate. These roles in particular have evolved but are difficult to imagine not existing - they’re still very important in the market today.
It’s too soon to tell what jobs will be here and which will disappear. Although it’s better to be proactive than reactive when it comes to your career. Take a look at the report now, consider whether your existing role is easily automated by a computer - perhaps it will help to look at the market today and think of which roles have changed dramatically or been totally replaced by machines. Invest in yourself by studying for relevant new skills and build your personal brand, don’t rely on traditional systems to serve you in the job market of the future.
