What is the company culture like at Jane App?

Much of what could be said here has already been repeated in previous negative reviews. Issues around culture, transparency, and internal politics are consistent and real. What stands out most is leadership behavior. You will be repeatedly told you’re doing great work, meeting expectations, and adding value, until you’re suddenly let go. Performance issues are cited that were never previously raised, documented, or discussed, leaving people blindsided and confused. There is a pattern of rewriting the narrative after the fact. Leadership will publicly post in channels about how someone has “decided to move on,” framing departures as voluntary even when they clearly are not. If you make a minor misstep or fall out of alignment with leadership’s personal values, a quiet grudge can form. From there, it often feels like a matter of time before a reason is found to push you out, regardless of prior performance or contributions.

Great culture and good pay

The company has a steady growth with a remote-friendly culture. Their benefits and pay are fairly standard (although they might feel that what they offer is out of the ordinary or more than industry standard). There are some standout employees who are passionate and enjoyable to work with.

While the remote-first culture is nice for work-life balance, I do not feel that employees know each other very well, nor is there an effort to proactively foster a more tight knit culture. This is a place where you simply work your 8 hours and log off. There hasn't been a pay increase for a while and I do not feel that the pay is keeping up with inflation or exceeding the industry standard. Feedback on pay and benefits were brushed off by senior leaders. There has been many surveys from senior leadership about the state of the company. However, there is little confidence that they are able or willing to respond to the many concerns from the employees. Feedback about the unresponsive leadership and other shortcomings were met with shrugs, nor are the people partners/managers willing to take proactive actions to steer the ship in the right direction.

Strong product with a loyal, passionate user base. The customer community is impressive and one of the company’s biggest assets. Some genuinely kind, well-intentioned colleagues. Company retreats and holiday gifts are a nice touch and appreciated. Remote first policy still stands and the company has avoided layoffs, though additional responsibilities have been quietly added without compensation, acting as a stealth pay cut. Financially conservative leadership that has ensured growth and sustainability. ESOP is a nice incentive for longer term employees, though the value of this is unlikely to be as meaningful for newer hires in my opinion

Favoritism and nepotism are prevalent. There’s a different culture and set of expectations for those that are in certain cliques and that are friends of senior leadership, including the founders. The treatment and expectations for these individuals are dramatically different from others, especially newer hires. Given there are multiple examples of this in completely separate departments, these are not one offs. This is part of the culture. Politics outweighs performance. Advancement and opportunity is often tied more to social alignment and personal relationships with leadership than to results or experience. If you’re not in the inner circle or don’t play along, your growth is limited, or worse, you’ll be pushed out. The worst management I’ve experienced in my career was at Jane. Many leaders are either inexperienced or outright toxic, and they tend to hire in their own image creating a self-perpetuating cycle. The company promotes a message of inclusivity, support, and psychological safety, but the reality is pretty much the opposite. Bullying and intimidation behaviors are tolerated and typically come from the same favored individuals mentioned above. Feedback is frequently dismissed or deflected with toxic positivity. Attempting to raise valid concerns and provide suggestions for improvements, especially about culture or favoritism, is often met with gaslighting or silence. Experienced employees frequently disappear without explanation. People would go from being visible to gone overnight, often after challenging the status quo or seemingly being disliked by certain people or groups. Critical decisions are made by a select few, and when those decisions go wrong, blame is often passed down. Documenting conversations and decisions becomes essential to protect yourself. There’s more energy spent on optics than outcomes and the ratio of people actually doing the work to those talking about it is way off.

I can’t say enough about the people in Support at Jane. It’s a team full of smart, caring humans who genuinely want to help each other win. There’s a real partnership here. No egos, just people showing up for each other and for our customers. The work is meaningful and interesting. We’re not just answering tickets, we’re supporting practitioners who are building and running their businesses, and that responsibility matters. Jane is growing and evolving in exciting ways, improving the product and expanding who we get to serve, while staying grounded in the culture of care and heart that made it special. This has honestly been one of the best teams and roles I’ve been part of.

Jane is growing, and like other hyper-growth companies, change is constant. Priorities can shift as we scale, and that can feel fast at times. But it also means there are opportunities to shape what we’re building and have real impact.

Great people, meaningful work, and a culture that actually lives up to what they say in the interview. - Competitive compensation, great perks, and you feel like the company actually invests in its people. - You know what's going on and why decisions are being made — no guessing games. - The culture is humble and caring — employees are genuinely looked after - Learning & growth opportunities

Honestly, less than a year in, I haven't found much to complain about.

One of the major bonus is that it is fully remote and the people are truly the best (besides leadership)

The current leadership at Jane has completely lost sight of what made the company successful: its people. The culture has become increasingly toxic, with a CEO whose attitude seems to be, "If you don't like it, then leave." This approach is not only dismissive but deeply narcissistic. Talented employees who built the foundation of Jane’s success are leaving in droves, either because they disagree with the unreasonable demands placed on the support team or because they've been pushed out by egotistical managers who refuse to take accountability for their actions. The environment is no longer one of collaboration and respect, but rather one of frustration and disillusionment.
