I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Akamai (Cambridge, MA) in Feb 2010
Interview
The interview process went slower than expected, however this was a new role for a new division. Overall the company is poised to do well however the position and for what they were looking for was too junior. I was looking for a more senior position, particularly after hearing comments from friends who previously worked there, getting in and being set at your position - opportunities to promote were far and few. Knowing this I came with alot of industry experience, the offer that was presented was a limited engagement, even for a Sr. Product Manager role as I've experienced in other companies. The communication between recruiters and hiring managers seemed non-existant, particularly coordinating onsite interviews, expectations for salary and for communicating overall benefits. Email seems to be a preferred form of communication rather than voice, which is disappointing as a candidate because it appears unprofessional when 'courting' a new recruit. In addition, the interviews were much easier than expected, the staff admitted that they had more work than they could accomplish and the goal was to decide which items to just let drop. This is a failure in the company to execute on its goals, in addition to not supporting current products but going into new categories/verticals. This seemed discouraging. I felt the company was not yet a company that had its complete act together but was striving. This is a great place for someone who is young in their career and wants to develop out more experiences, not for someone who is in their mid-career looking for big opportunities.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How I would develop a business case and rationale to convince executive management for exploring further development into a new market space?
Very tedious, disorganized at times, the hiring team was good but very disorganized and there was very little communication across people interviewing. Times between interviews was also very less due to limited co-ordination
