If I had to describe my experience with Automattic's interview process in one word, it would be this: abusive. After contacting me and asking me to interview, they were shockingly disrespectful of my time, paying a fraction of my usual hourly rate to essentially gaslight me for weeks. I have decades of experience developing websites and providing technical support, and I know WordPress inside and out. I'm well qualified to resolve any technical problems that might arise with their platform, interact effectively with clients, and communicate and collaborate with a team in a friendly and efficient manner. The work itself was not difficult at all. The mind games, however, were outrageous.
